Hi guys
Have you guys seen Lynn Thompon's video on You Tube? He demonstrates how to use a Tomahawk in self defense (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ii7XwamZSm0). It is definitely worth a look. I learned a few things, I didn't know. He even has a DVD that costs $99 which teaches how to use a Tomahawk defensively. He is one cool guy. He has lots of videos on You Tube some on Machettes, knives, axes, and Tomahawks.

I would look for better sources of information than that slug.

Did you see his shooting video before he pulled it? That dude is living in his own little world...

I would recommend Lynn's dvd sets on any edged weapons. He is the real deal imo. He has the respect of many of the weapons experts around. I havn't heard any favorable reviews on his shooting dvd though.

As far as $99 I would look around some more as these usually go for less than $50 from most places.

I don't know if anyone out there has done anything in this market making them the real deal. I just look at his "cut and don't be cut" system and think it works. He has the respect of McClemore and Keating who are two of the biggest weapons guys out there too if that means anything.

Just watching him duel at the end of those sets makes me a believer in him and his techniques.

The dude advocated shooting the ground in front of you, and blindly shooting through walls.

He is completely out of his mind, and anything of value that he might have to say he go from someone else who actually might have done it.

That video is wrong on so many levels. McClemore has way better teaching material, you might also want to look and the Sayoc schools tomahawk template. Whatever you end up practicing, make sure it is actually applicable in a real situation by having a reliable teaching source.

I think the whole point of his video here is to demonstrate some ways to use a tomahawk in combat. It is not something that anyone can learn on their own. He is just demonstrating the potential of it- not as an end all to fighting. He is not wrong in what he was teaching either. These are some of the ways traditionally they were used, 'hawk and knife'. I find he is a little overboard when doing his dvd stuff.

My god!............ what a load...... 16 whole minutes of it.

This video and thompsons other self-made mall ninjary DVD's are the very reason the knife industry has such a problem with Anti-knife groups and legislation. The only thing he is dangerous to is the knife community as a whole. He casts all of us in a very poor light with his self aggrandizing antics, which is all they really are in the end.

That video is awesome, it doesn't seem at all practical or applicable, but allot of fun to watch.

Yes, exactly.

If we had to worry about what the anti knive community thinks we would never have any videos on the topic. We would end up with a bunch of people clueless on how to use a knife safely. Anti gun or anti knive groups all want the same things to control us. What is scary is that they are winning. I live in occupied America (Chicago) where our rights have been taken away from us year after year. I don't know how they get away with it. It is clearly stated in the People's bill of right our rights to own and carry a gun. If it referred to the government rights then it would be called the government's bill of rights. Lynn Thompson might not be the best to display how to use a tomahawk to defend oneself but he is only one of a few willing to do it for free on You Tube. My hat goes off to him.

I'd rather get training advice from Steven Segall knife videos. I like CS knives but Thompson is a tool....and not a very sharp tool. (in my opinion of course).

You must have missed the Supreme Court ruling that give's Chicago residents their right to own hand guns. Still cannot carry unfortunately but maybe one day.

And do you know why they'd be winning? Because of people like LT giving them ammunition to use against the rest of us, whom use our knives responsibly. And to you it's just another Freebie. Sorry, I'd rather pay for proper training than watch LT huff, puff, sweat, stroke his ego and give them that ammo.

Points:

1.) That video is NOT training, it's a demonstration of some of the weapon capabilities of the tomahawk.

2.) Nothing he shows in that video is wrong.

3.) I don't see him going "over the top". Remember it is a demonstration by a guy wanting to sell his product. I don't care about his shooting video, this is a different video, discuss the other elsewhere.

4.) I think most of the comments against him are "cult of personality" problems. People don't like his personality, they don't like how he sells his products, and they don't like some of the things he promotes (some of which truly are stupid), and throw the baby out with the bathwater.

5.) I give no heed to fools. Not talking about the weapon capabilities of a tomahawk because soem fool may not like it and want to make legislation banning them is like saying we can only talk about hunting and target shooting with guns and ignore their weapon side. In case you haven't noticed, antis will be antis no matter what, they will make up facts if they don';t have any, and that video shows nothing that is a factual reason for banning what is an integral to both European and American history.

LT really does come off as a huge tool in his videos (some are worse than others). I suspect that part of this may be that he is a business man first, and he uses his salesman voice and attitude (which works for some people, but not for others. It can't be said that he isn't a good salesman) for his training videos, which isn't the voice and attitude that martial artists expect from teachers.
That said, I have both his knife fighting and hawk fighting video series and they are good — I wouldn't call my opinion 'expert' but I have over 15 years of martial arts training so my opinion isn't totally worthless, either. They are not the be-all-end-all of knife and hawk fighting systems, but they have good, basic information (and some slightly more advanced information). You could do a lot worse than these videos. I think that if you approach his videos, like all videos, with an open mind and a grain of salt then they will give you an excellent foundation for either weapon. There are certainly short-comings to his systems, but I think they are easily identifiable if the viewer has seen any other good videos, as is a generally good method for weeding out crap.
In conclusion: (1) LT comes off as a huge d-bag to many people, especially in his training videos. It is true that he has trained with a lot of great martial artists, and I think he could learn a thing or two about humility from them. (2) If you can get past his personality, his training videos are good for what they are and less good for what they are not. I think a lot of martial artists can relate to this, because many of us have experienced teachers who have good things to teach but are a-holes.
