Good Morning everyone,

Hope everyone is well , but I have a question concerning machetes. Are they considered knives, swords, or tools or what ?
What is the U.S. code on carrying and using machetes?

And if anyone can be more specific on telling me their status in CT and NY states.

Thanks so much everyone, Iv'e read the laws but I can't figure out if its legal or not because I don't think machetes are knives but you never know what politics will classify them as.

Have a great day

Best Regards,

There are no US nationwide laws on machetes (indeed nationwide laws on blades in general are rare and very specific). Generally speaking most states regard them as tools so long as they are used logically as tools. For example they are commonly available for purchase at most hardware, lawn and garden or farming stores, and little mind is paid to them if they are being used for brush-clearing, coconuts etc. Even in areas where there is a maximum blade length limit on carry, the normal labor usage is accepted under the logic that if enforced by the letter of the law, every sushi chef and landscaper in the state would have to be arrested. Carrying one holstered as a fashion accessory, or claiming one carries for self-defense, is another matter entirely and will at the very least result in a disorderly conduct citation if the law of the state or city doesn't prohibit it outright.

 You can check the website of Machete Specialists. While they do not discuss the carrying of machetes within the United States, they provide information concerning the shipping and importation of machetes. Information provided includes US customs regulations numbers that help define machetes as agricultural tools for importation.

Concerning the carrying of machetes, it seems best to be very discrete and to carry them in a place and in a manner that shows the machete has a legitimate use.
