Machete/Tomahawk Belt Carry?

Hey All,

Been wondering this for some time. What's your preferred method of belt carry for a machete, full tang tomahawk or even a big knife? If I just put the sheath through my belt I don't like how the blade is loose and bounces around when I'm running or moving quickly. If I carry it like a drop leg system with straps around my leg (securing the blade and eliminating bouncing) it is uncomfortable when sitting and feels restricted and awkward.

How do you folks belt carry? Is there a better way to belt carry machetes/tomahawks than what I've tried?

I usually just use the leather loop thingy to attach my kukri or ginunting to my belt when walking around. For safety considerations, it’s generally not advisable to do backflips and other tactical operator parkour tricks when you have a big blade on your person. :D Perhaps you can explore the Baldric rig where the knife is stowed on your person via a chest rig.

Haven’t figured tomahawks yet though. Usually just throw them in my rucksack.

:) I have carried medium sized , like a Cold Steel Trail Master through the woods for many hours at a time . Just "sash" or southern comfort style carry .

But not much running or jumping around . You might need a special rig or maybe hang onto your larger type blade with one hand to stabilize .

So far as comfort , you gotta experiment to find what works for you, of course ...but a lot of it is just getting used to the discomfort , awkwardness , etc . and learning to move in concert with the equipment . It can take awhile .

But after many years of regular carry , it will feel weird and wrong to be without it .

I prefer to use danglers to attach to my belt versus putting the belt through the sheath loop. Having that articulating joint means it swings more naturally and is less jarring on a hike. I almost never secure the tip of the sheath to my leg, but I always seem to have a thigh pocket or carpenter loop to tie off to instead of looping around my thigh; even a small irritation can raise a welt after enough miles. That sees me through for everything Nessmuk sized to BK9, I have no need to carry a machete where I go--it would either be tied to my pack or in my hand I imagine. I like my hawks masked, the head secured to my side on the belt, haft riding free. Realistically the slower draw and use time is safer than carrying it sash style, both because I don't wear a sash and that I am far more likely to fall on it than get into a quickdraw challenge with a mountain lion.

My neighbor and hiking buddy uses a bungy cord as a leg strap. The goal is not too eliminate bouncing completely, it just reduces it by 80-90%. Since it isn't tight and it stretches, the bungy cord seems to adjust itself when you sit down.

Just make sure it doesn't ride right up against your twig n berries. o_O
