I've been noticing several different knives manufactured in China lately with Magnacut blades. I thought I read when it first came on the scene that it wasn't going to be sold to Chinese manufacturers for first five years or something along those lines? I'm not trying to start a whole American vs Chinese knives in this thread so please keep the politics out of the discussion please. It honestly doesn't matter to me either way as I collect mostly American made knives, but I do own and enjoy my share of Asian made ones as well. I was just wondering if something has changed or if these manufacturers have skated around the initial mandate.

Is it really Magnacut, or just some random steel being labeled as Magnacut???

These were well known American designers that have their knives manufactured in China. So I would assume it's actually Magnacut but who knows?

If reputable manufacturers like WE, Reate, Kizer, etc are using it, then I’d say either the rules have changed or they found a loophole.

'What do you think?'

'What do you know?'

'What can you prove?'

Serious questions in a court of law.

Serious questions in QC.

Send a 'Magnacut' blade from China to Larrin and let him analyze it, then answer the questions. What he concludes won't be easy to dispute.

I have a sneaky suspicion that the Chinese manufacturers try to "reverse engineer" steel for knives. They will label it Magnacut, VG10, etc but it is actually one of their mills trying to reproduce the blend. I find it hard to believe they are shipping steel from the US to China to make blades and then ship them back, but I could be wrong and personally have no way to prove this.

I have seen examples of midtech makers explaining that certain parts are produced overseas, but with American supplied materials. Can't remember the helpful details. Digging for it now.

The manufacturers that are producing these knives, like Reate and Bestech, have too much of their reputation in the balance to throw that away on a faked steel.

One single knife gets tested and found to be something else… boom

It just doesn’t make sense for them to do that when they can sell extremely expensive and lauded knives in M390 and 20CV that people still love.

MagnaCut is a cherry on top—it’s not worth risking the whole pie for one cherry.

Yall should be more concerned with heat treat protocols than if it's actually the steel in question. Magnacut with a poor ht is just a marketing ploy. And many US manufacturers are treating it poorly too.
How do you know who is doing good heat treats? Are you talking about hardness?

Supposedly, on their recent work Bestech has been hitting 63-64. Whether the rest of the heat treat is quality or not is, of course, difficult to answer. Reate on the other hand seems to run everything a little soft, though they may be doing better and I haven’t heard about it.
