Makers - Utility Knife/Blade Holder?

Guys,

I've built (mostly) kit knives or knives from parts to this point. I've been looking through my usual suppliers for anyone that sells parts to make a custom utility knife. I mean...not the blades themselves, which would just be standard replaceable utility blades....but the pieces or a kit or even dimensioned drawings that could be used to make a fixed or foldable utility knife.

I googled around but came up empty. I'm hoping someone has seen something along these lines. So far the only thing I can come up with is buy one and reverse engineer it...but that seems a bit of a waste.

Thoughts?

Are you talking about one of those folding utility knives? That would be kinda cool to have a really slick custom one.
You'd be the envy of the job site for sure!!

I use this one for packages, bought it for less than $10 at a harbor freight a year or two ago.

I can't find any kits to make your own, but buying a super cheap one and reverse engineering it seems like an interesting idea.
If you make any progress, please come back and share the details.

Thanks guys. I'll pick up a couple of cheap ones and see what I can come up with.

My thought here is, I really have built enough fixed blade and standard folders at this point that, unless I plan to sell them, there is no reason for me to make more. However, I could use a nice utility knife or even a few maybe.

This is what I use... My most used 'knife' from Snecx. Single piece of titanium and blade locks.

Not sure about making your own though.

Thanks guys.

I went by HF this weekend, bought the "best" flip close style utility knife they sell (came as a 2 pack with a large utility knife, a mini-utility knife and blades for both....$10).

I've got it torn down to it's component pieces. It's actually surprisingly complicated.

Rather than reverse engineering it, I'm considering moding it. As is, it is all really beefy and clunky and (of course) ugly. I'm thinking about milling the blade holder portion's sides to make it thinner, doing the same thing with the lockback hardware, and making new side-bolsters for it using brass and hardwood. I'll post some pics if I come up with anything I'm proud of. In the meantime, I've already used the mini-knife to open a couple of boxes. It's a handy little tool.
