I was debating posting this here or in the knife makers discussion thread but I am not really looking for advice on how to make a knife more so on whether or not I should. I have had this scythe for about five years now. I received it while helping to clear out an estate as it was going to be thrown away by the woman's children so I rescued it. I have the blade and the original socket for it and other than that don't really know much about it other than I won't use it in its current state. The only info I have is that it is at least twenty years old from the children's estimation of how long it has been at the house and that it is marked Craftsmen made in Sweden. I do not know if it would be valuable to someone else. I do not ask this to make a profit I just do not want to destroy something that may be rare or have meaning to someone. My question is I was thinking about making a knife out of the tip portion of the blade and then using the rest to make flint strikers after hardening them. Do any of you think I should?

If it were mine I would not make a knife out it,I would try and find an old handle for it and restore it to its original form.In fact I do have one in my shop which is a converted mini-barn,it makes for a nice rustic ornament and since I have a Stihl weed eater I doubt I will ever use mine either. As for value I doubt if it will be worth very much.As for making a knife, considering the quality of the modern tool steels now days IMO it's hardly worth making a knife out of.

I'll buy it from you rather than see that fate befall such a blade. That particular curve isn't seen as often as others and it's in decent shape. There are TONS of blades with fatal cracks that you can find for free or extremely cheap and those are fair game, but they don't make blades like that anymore and it deserves to be restored and used as it was intended.

If your interested shoot me a PM as I said I'm not huge on the profit end I would just like to see it get some use. Plus the wife has been complaining about it being in the garage for the past year and I have been doing some heavy cleaning so it is time for it to find a new home.

The steel may be too soft to make a decent knife .They are often .40-.50 % Carbon You should be able to get a new handle for that .
