Making Zippers Quiet

Anyone have any ideas how I can silence a zipper pull? I have a leather bag that I'd like to use for all my EDC items, but it has large zipper pulls that are very noisy when it's carried or rides in the truck. From what I can tell, the clanging noise comes from the metal pull rattling against the metal head of the zipper. I though about cutting the pulls off and using paracord or something and making my own zipper pull ties.

Has anyone else found a remedy for this kind of thing?

Thanks.

yes u can made them easier to open and a little bit more silent by rubbing the zipper teeth with a white candle stick. The wax of the candle will put a light coating on the teeth making it easier and more quit to open.

misunderstood your question, u could buy some "shrink tube" (electricians use it, comes in different colours) and slide it over the tabs and heat it with a heatgun or flame. This will make it shrink and match the tabs perfect

Yowza Underaged, I was about to have a heart attack over this thread...the mother in me thought "do what?" Can't you just live with it? Cavelady

You could just wear a kilt, that might....

OOOooohhh!! :o

If the pulls are really big, you could also try dipping them in some of that vinyl tool-handle-coating stuff, or just painting them with it.

binford,

sure, you can cut off the existing metal pulls and tie p-cord to them. it certainly works but is a little too permenant for my tastes. try weaving some cord through the pull by starting in the hole that attaches to the zipper slide with the middle of the cord, put both ends through the end hole and tie knot or place a cord-end-plastic thingy. this does a reasonably good job of keeping them quite and you can take them off if you like. the north face makes glow-in-the-dark tabs (cord-end-plastic thingy) that are a nice touch, but they are hard to find. i get mine from a climbing shop in asheville, nc. just in case you are interested http://www.blackdome.com/

try cutting off the metal zipper pulls and replacing them with paracord
blackhawk sells silent zipper pulls for that purpose, but paracord will do just fine

Tie a paracord extender onto the existing pulls.

THEN, use the shrink tube to cover the metal and part of the paracord pull.

How about liquid rubber? (the stuff that you dip tools into)

Binford, are you still sponsoring Tool Time =D (TV show, Home Improvement)

I second the liquid rubber stuff for tool grips. Any home improvement store should carry it. However the shrink tubing would probably be just as good. Just don't set your clothes on fire when shrinking them.

I have a bunch of Eagle stuff. Whenever I get a new back the first thing that get done is cut off the zipper pulls and replace with para cord. I did the same thing to my tac vest. I can not stand to hear a zipper rattle.
