This is the maratac extreme 16x4" bottle holder. next to it is the maxpedition 12x5 bottle holder. The big differences:

The maratac extreme has 2 full length natick snaps where the maxpedition has a just pals webbing. Unfortunately, the mapxedition has a "shoulder strap" built right int he way of using the webbing - it's not really long enough to be a shoulder strap, it's more of a long handle. when extended all the way it reaches the bottom of the ribs - not short enough to be a handle and not long enough to be a shoulder strap.

The maratac has 1 zipper on the top and pouch, so you have to reach to the back every time you open it. The back panel where the lid comes back is much smaller on the maratac so the lid comes all the way open easier.

The maratac has a removable sleeve where the maxpeditions is sewn into the bag. The maritac is about 4" with the sleeve, and closer to 5" without it. You can fit a 2 liter into the maxpedition but it's a serious push to get it in and out. in the maratac it's a tight fit, but you don't have to apply pressure to get it in and out. That's without the sleeve, the 2 liter won't fit into the 4" sleeve.

Like all maxpedition products, the 12x5 is stiff as a board in all regards, it makes zipping it kinda difficult where the maratac is easier, but floppier. The maxpedition's fabric is weather treated to repel water where the maratacs is open cordura/canvas. The maratac's pouch is huge, enough to fit full sized spatula's and longer items. it also comes with a shoulder strap, something that would cost an extra 9$ to get for the maxpeditions - cause seriously the built in strap is not long enough to be functional.

If I could change one thing about the maratac: make it 5.5" in diameter with the sleeve. I know that that would make wine bottles be a little more loose in the bag, but it would allow you to carry 2 liters easily as well as larger gear like foldable stools and larger tripods.

Without the sleeve the hydrant is able to house three large 230g jetboil fuel canisters with the pcs cup/burner. With just the extendable utensils in the pouch, it's got a lot of room for flat accessories.

The maxpedition 12x5 can only hold one canister and the pcs cup/burner.

It's noticably bigger (here it's stretched a bit because it's empty) but it's not crazy big. If you go on a longer trip that requires more than one cannister, it's nice to have something that keeps it all in a nice tight space.

i have had the county comm bag since it first came out, haven't had a chance to use it yet though. possibly tomorrow

either way i really like the bag, very glad i bought it. with the front zip pocket it is a very versatile bag

nice little review

Where do you find the Maratac Extreme Hydrant model? Web searches yielded nothing useful and I didn't see them on Countycomm.

The maxpedition's fabric is weather treated to repel water where the maratacs is open cordura/canvas.

Easily remedied with a $5 can of silicone spray. Walmart sells a brand comparable to Camp Dry at a slightly lower price. I've also treated cotton canvas with Thompson's Sealer spray. The latter took forever for the smell to finally dissipate, but it works well at repelling water.

guyon got to it before me

at 22$ it's very much worth it. I try to tack on a few extra led/lighters/what nots to spread the shipping charge, but even at 32.79$ (tacking on the shipping and tax to just one item) the bag is awesome.

Do you arrange your books by publisher? That's a lot of Dover books in a row. :p

Only on that shelf. On other shelves it's by subject, fiction, martial arts, photography, art etc. I keep the dovers in order of author :p. I beleive I have the complete dover thrift collection, but I may be missing a few of the newest releases. The bottom shelf is fairy tales, with leather bound editions of hans christian anderson, brothers grimm, peuralt, fables of aesop, tanglewood tales, and Arabian nights, as well as a leather bound set of the wizard of oz.

Are the peanut and split pea lighters good? What fuel to they use? How durable are they?

Thanks!

Thanks!

they are basically round zippo's with threading and an o ring. They use the same fuel as zippo's, and have the same basic construction, flint and striker. They are sturdy, but having relatively fine machine threading so I don't know that I'd want to carry them as every day users. The key benefit to them is that the fuel doesn't evaporate and they are water proof (thanks to the o ring). You can get them cheaper than at county comm, I'm just never sure what exactly 'alloy' means when I read it on the other sales/auctions.

I just ordered a jetboil and was considering these two choices vs not getting a bag at all.
the maxpedition is a bit pricier but I am still not sure on my decision.

That looks really nice, I need something to carry my two-liter around and that fits the bill!

i ended up ordering the bag from county comm. i received my jetboil and extra tanks today...should have the bag next week.
i also ordered a cheapo mug from walmart and a knife/fork/spoon combo to put into the bag.
i was considering the snow peak titanium 600 mug but didnt like how there wasnt a lid for it and for $35, i think there should be a lid...considering the cheap cups from mcdonalds have lids.

anyone know if the county comm bag is water resistant? or does it need a scotch guard spray for it.

I have two of these fine bags in green...I'd trade both for one in black. Still, very nice bags!

Finally! A review with pictures of the INterior of a bag! Others, take note!
Very nice!

Thank you for posting

Anyone have any pics of any other gear strapped ot the Hydrant? I'm curious if its more OD green or Foliage green.

While I'm here, anyone wanting to get rid of their Hydrant? I was thinking of getting one to use as a day pack around the Black Rock desert.
