Hi. im looking for a mariners kinfe for my father for christmas. i have done countless internet searches and found only a couple of options of questionable construction. I was wondering if you fine gents could point me in the right direction. The knife he would like is a traditonal folder construction with a mariners spike. like i said the only one ive found yet are cheeply made designs and am getting kind of frustrated so any help would be great. thanks

Try these google links:

Rigging Knives

The only one I own is from the 70's so I have no other current info to share.

Search auction site for 315 Buck. Some are there all the time and they 'are' heavy duty. 300Bucks

Top quality no doubt but not really a good fit for the Traditional Forum. Maybe we'll move this over to "General" so that additional styles can be considered.

I just picked up a Rough Rider knock off of the Buck yatchsman. I thought the quality was amazing for a 50.00$ knife ... the cool part was it cost 13.00$. For the average person there is nothing wrong with the Rough Rider brand.

There is one bearing 'Smith & Wesson' on it - probably ave to below ave quality even for a PRC-made knife. It was $7.95 from an Evil-bay seller. I have a pair of older Buck 315s - nice, but pricey and hard to find when you 'want' one. A better suggestion is the Victorinox Mariner series in Swiss Army knives - like the 'Skipper', shown below, and the simpler (No cork screw or pliers.) 'Helmsman'. Below, L-R, is a Buck 301 Stockman, Buck 315, and Victorinox 'Skipper', for comparison. If I still had my sailboat, a 21-foot flush deck (San Juan 21) that slept four, I'd carry the Victorinox - probably the 'Helmsman'. Evil-Bay and Amazing-zon usually have them for $35-$60.

Don't get him the S&W version - it really is cheesy - and the Marlinspike is pointed - you could sew with it!

I have that Rough Rider as well, It is a very good sturdy knife for under 20.00 shipped.

I'll second the A.G. Russel Seamaster, but also suggest something by David Boye. He makes some really nice stuff, and it doesn't cost you your firstborn to get one! Click

Try Myerchin...they have a good line of marine knives. If you have a West Marine store near you, they usually carry stock of Myerchin and others.

all great designs but im looking for the more traditional ... like the buck 315...thank you all for your input and suggestions... i do really like the ag russell but the fixed blade design is a little too big for my dad and the boyde is awesome, ide buy that in a heart beat but i do not have a boat..:O(

thanks again

How about this one by Mercator. Very traditional German design. Carbon steel blade, Rose wood handle with brass anchor inlay. There is a review of this knife by Dagon on youtube. I think your dad might enjoy it.

God Bless

I tie decorative knots and often use a rigging knife, my most used one is a Captain Currey lockspike bosun (see link in Pete1977's post), my nicest one is an Ibberson, I have seen some by Myerchin that look good.

Camillus and Schrade (see this thread) used to make some nice ones, which I believe can still be found on ebay.
