I saw Behr Gryles(sp.?) on Masters of Survival last night, using a knife that looked suspiciously like an Ontario, D2, RAT 5, without the black coating on the blade. Was it my imagination, or what? Did anyone else catch it?

It may have been Bear's proprietary knife. BTW when did Bear become a Master of Survival. Bear seems more a maestro of showmanship.

God bless,

PS: If you're lost in the African savanna and in need of water you can always squeeze some out of fresh elephant poo.

My favorite BG moment was when he tried to catch a wild horse with a home made lasso. He was going to somehow break the horse and ride him to safety.

I'll bet you expend some serious calories attempting that feat.

I have to admit that I've been following this guy for quite some time and saw lots of his little tv shows... By far I would not call him a Master of Survival, he is more like a well trained " I eat all the strange things that I come across for some money" type of guy... For sure there are some good information in those shows that CAN safe your live but honestly I would rather have some real training like the one from Jeff to actually learn to use the techniques and get corrected when you're doing it wrong... Bear Grylls is more like shocking some couch potatoes than a realistic survival documentation... After the first one or two episodes they started to show a disclaimer that some of the actions are fake and that he is getting a special training from experienced locals whenever he reaches the next set.
In the end its just good entertainment when you get rid of the idea that the shown is real ;)
+1 for the elephant poo water source:D

I liked the one where once again, he was somewhere in Africa and began following a stream that was/went underground. He turned to the camera and said "I don't know what's in here, but I need to keep following this river. There could be bats, snakes, a drop off. It's pitch black and I won't be able to see so I need to be extra careful". Fine for him, but what do you think the camera guy is thinking in all of this?

It deffinately wasn't the Gerber Knife that is being sold with his name on it.

I'm 90% sure that it is a Gerber Prodigy.

Did you actually see the show?(not being sarcastic). The blade was not shaped like the Gerber, nor was the grip shaped like it. I could be way off, but it sure looked to me like some variation of the RAT series of knives. It was a quick glimps, that's all I got, so like I said, I could be grossly mistaken.
Anyway, it's neat to speculate on it.

Everyone gives Bear bad remarks, but he's still a solid man. His attempt at breaking the wild horse was almost humorous to me too, I think he knew it wasn't going to happen and just gave it a go for the heck of it. Bet Monty Roberts could do it.

There were reports that those weren't "wild" horses at all - they were brought in from a local ranch for the purposes of the show.

Bear Grylls only does what he does for the entertainment part of the show. I am sure he knows his stuff, he just does this because it is likely what Discovery wants for him to do.

It says in each show, that many of the situations are staged to give him an opportunity to demonstrate certain survival skills. It also states that before he goes into an area that he is not familiar with, that he is briefed on the nature of the animals, and vegetation he will be encountering, and what to look out for. I seem to remember seeing it stated somewhere, that he is an ex-SAS trooper. Those guys are some of the best trained, and toughest soldiers on the planet.
