Hi guys, anyone knows if Maxam knives are any good? They seem a bargain at the price of about $20.

I've got a fixed blade Maxam that I've used for camping for a couple of years. It's held up very well.

I've also got a couple of Maxam folders that broke, loosened up, or the locks don't work right... the folders have all been junk.

Maxam is rubbish. True to invest a little more and you will get a knife you can trust your life and your fingers with.
for folders i would look into the Byrd line of Spyderco.

i understand that u sure get what u pay for. i have a Spyderco Native in VG-10. perfect folder for most of my use.

im just looking for a fixed blade knife that is cheap, can be abused without worrying about the cost, or if its lost. basically used at the campside shared by everyone.

The only company consistently worse than Maxam is Frost Cutlery, and I wouldn't wish that crap on my worst enemy.

this one (click pic and scroll down) Is a good buy, available with or without sheath.

All the knives on that page are good values, but I posted one of similar size to the one you posted. Only the handle is not likely to snap off these.;)

Try a Tramontina 10, 12 or 14 inch machete. I understand they are very cheap in the States -- you'll be surprised at what you get for the $. I think they are even cheaper than the Maxams.

That Maxam is a special design though. If you're behind enemy lines being hunted by bad guys, you merely chop at a couple of branches and - presto! - off goes the blade and you have a handy hollow tube you can breath through while hiding submerged in the lake. :D

As mentioned above are good places to look

Also look into a standard kraton handle Ka-Bar

They may cost a little more than double but it is 100 times the knife.

Start off with something quality now and you'll save yourself money in the long run.

We were thinking right along the same lines...
I was looking for a link to post; while you were posting! :)

Other suggestions in the thread are good too; except I do
respectfully disagree with the S&W recommendation.
Not a big fan of S&W (knives).

I have a few friends who have them and they are pure junk. The wholesale price on that knife through my distributer is $3-$4 so that should tell you what you are getting for your money. It is a display item at best.

I just laughed so damn hard coffee shot threw my nose, thanks Torz...
