Maxamet stain issues

Hey guys,

Quick question for the members that have a maxamet bladed knife PM2, Para 3 the other spydies etc...

I got a Para 3 in maxamet off the market place here and it was in great condition. It has grow to be one of my favorite carries and its still wicked sharp. After a few weeks of carry I notice its getting stained pretty quick. ( I use my knives semi frequently through the day so its a user for sure but its not like I'm batoning with it) I've tried cleaning it with oil and hitting it with a microfiber cloth, but it seems to just stay pretty spotty.

Any suggestions on how to get it clean or cleaner? I know its not going to be spotless because I use the sh!t out of it, I'm just trying to prevent pitting and my expertise in maxamet is n0t the best.

Thanks in advance.

When I want to remove stains from steel, I will strop the flats on my loaded strop. (Fine chromium oxide) and try to keep the finish even.

On some knives I will use paper loaded with the CR and hit low spots (ie blades with fullers where the strop can't hit).

It does tend to shine the knife up... so over time they get more shiney.

Does not work well with bead blasted knives.

It’s Patina. Maxamet is not stainless.

Use it, clean it, dry it, oil it, repeat. Nothing you do will ever completely prevent it nor take it all off, short of sanding or polishing it off. And guess what... next time you use it, it’ll be right back.

I love carbon steel knives with a rich patina. They make stainless knives look boring to me.

Tool steels like Maxamet and K390 will stain, that’s not an issue. As long as you keep the steel wiped down it will not pit.
You actually want it to patina because it helps protect against rusting/pitting. That’s why you see so many comments and pics of people forcing a patina on their knife.
If you want to keep it clean looking, don’t use it, put it in a safe and admire it o_O.

You can do a search for a super eraser that will clean it up nicely. Not the Mr.Clean magic eraser. It’s called “Super Eraser”

Sounds like patina. I wouldn't worry about it, gives it character ;)

Agree with these guys. Let your patina shine!

Stick the blade into a large lemon, leave it overnight & you will get a fairly even & deep patina. It will increase resistance to rust. However if you want to remove the patina spots so that the Maxamet remains new looking, I've read that Flitz does the job (but I have not personally tried it). Don't really see the point to trying to keep the Maxamet looking new & shiny because as soon as you start cutting fruits etc, the patina stains will be back.

I recommend the Manix 2 in Maxamet. Love the ball bearing lock action :)

Had a manix in a different steel (cant remember which steel)...excellent knife...just not perfect for me.
But lets not hijack this fellows thread. :/
