Maxpedition Proteus or SabreCat?

Really like Maxpedition stuff I have, need a small fanny type pack to replace a very old and worn out The North Face pack. Over the shoulder will not work for me at all, period. So, I like the Proteus, but always need more room. I don't have any where to try these myself, so I was wondering if the SabreCat might actually be too big for practical use. That is to say, fully loaded it might be to heavy for around the waist. I use my bags like this mostly as tool bags, a few tools (heavy), zip ties, flashlights, just general use stuff. Any thoughts, as the SabreCat is twice as expensive, I don't want to just buy both and see.

The two packs are very different. If you know what you're going to use it for and compare the specs the right pack for your need should become apparent.
Here is a good video on the Sabercat. The Sabercat is a nice design but it looks like it could get too heavy for a waist pack if it was fully loaded.

Man, that is a good review, thanks. I like the Sabrecat, but fully loaded, I dont think it would work for me without shoulder straps. Some guys at edcforums have put shoulder straps on the Sabrecat and the Devil Dog, looks like Maxpedition would do this from the factory.

Good video on some mods of the Sabre Cat:

I have a Proteus and a Devildog, and have used them both as hunting packs. The DD is similar, maybe a bit smaller, than the Sabercat I think. Fully loaded it really needs to be used with shoulder straps, especially if you're carry dense items like water, or in your case, tools. With straps, it's not bad for an all-day trek. The Proteus is about the most I would like to wear with a waistbelt alone. Anything bigger than the DD, I think you're getting into small backpack territory (Pygmy Falcon comes to mind). If you can't tolerate straps, the Proteus and a downsized attitude is the answer I think.

I agree here... Uhm fully loaded the sabrecat is a hell of a pack to haul... it's got big compartments which makes it convenient for all your possibles, food and shelter. and if this is the case, you will be dragging it below your waste line.. and its annoying.. before I bought any LC shoulder straps for it.. all I had was a single messenger/shoulder bag strap.. this works very well..
