In the market for either a Neat Freak or Pack Rat, anyone have any experience with both. I am specifically looking for internal volume and usefulness.

I own both. I have one neat freak and two of the pack rats. To me the Maxped seems to be the winner. It comes with the little internal divider (Which I took out and don't find very useful). But it gives you options in case you do want to use it. The Maxped also seems to be better planned out on the inside. Also it has flap closure for the two little compartments inside. It has Molle straps (Sort Of) on the back and the front flap can ride inside or outside the mesh compartment and has molle points on it for add ons. Plus the material is just more durable. I also like the fact that the little handle on top has non-slip material on the maxped. The Pack Rat is good. And the hi-viz yellow interior is nice... but the Maxped is the overall winner IMHO. I use the Pack Rats as soft material packs for things like first aid kits and such and just stow them. The Maxped is my Fire Making kit with all my fire steels and tender materials. And I have it out and use it all the time. It's just more rugged. And by better planned I mean you can stuff more things in it and not have them crush each other... the pack rat runs out of room fast because the pouches all face one another and you can't off set some of your gear to make the most of the room. Go with the maxped... you won't regret it. I have black in all three... I really want to get an OD next.

i have a pack rat and like it a lot FWIW, i have had it for 4 or 5 yrs now.

Take a lok at the TAD Gear OP1. You can pack a ton of stuff in it and rig it up for different style carries.

I have both the Spec-Ops Pack Rat and recently added a Maxpedition Neatfreak.

Agree with most of what was written earlier. The Neatfreak is larger and thicker and can hold more gear.

The Pack Rat is better if you want to carry it inside of another pack and transfer it among packs. Its material is more flexible (less rigid) than the Neatfreak.

I removed the Neatfreak's center divider and don't use it because it interfereres with what I carry.

The Neatfreak pockets are located so there is less interference among them, but you still have to pay attention to how you distribute your gear among the pockets or else the Neatfreak will develop a gointer bulge or two.

The velcro veeble (for lack of a better word) attachment on the back of the Neatfreak can rub against your body and get in the way. Several Neatfreak owners on another forum have removed the offending veeble.

If you guys were buying a max,and you were looking for say a day pack size, which would be big enough but not too big? I have the typhoon and that is heavy when loaded down so I want to down size but not get too small, something for my binocs and survival kit but yet double duty as my river wading bag for fishing?
