Just wondering about Mcusta knives, how is the fit and finish and over all quality. They have some very cool looking designs and was thinking about giving one a try for edc.

If you have any pics, lets see them! :D

I had a yoroi for a short while. Fit & Finish were top notch. Edge was sharper from the factory than my spydercos. I ended up selling it because it did not have a pocket clip. I plan on picking up another one of these days.

Very nice looking knife. thanks! anyone else have anything to add before I pull the trigger on one of these?

I don't got one. But I have read only praise for the fit and finish.

I have one of the Ice Storms by Mcusta for Browning. It is Mcusta's MC-10 blade with MC-4 scales. The knife arrived sharp and by all appearances very well made. Since then I have carried it a good bit and really like the knife. The VG-10 blade hold an edge very well and the operation of the action smooth as silk. This is a very impressive knife. If you want you can try one of the Brownings on the cheap before spending bigger bucks. The Ice Storm like mine can be had for $26.99 at CDNN Sports online.

I have an MC 14 purchased from www.japaneseknifedirect.com

It's a nice knife. Great steel. Solid construction. But I would say that fit and finish is just a hair less than Spyderco, Benchmade, and Al Mar (Moki). Maybe it's just by design, but the edges of the lock, clip and frame are a bit sharp on the hand and the lock action is a touch rough. The blade design is not as refined as what Benchmade is putting out these days.

That said, however, it's a beautiful knife, works great and has a good clip design that allows the knife to ride deeper in your pocket than virtually anything else out there.

I don't think you'd regret getting one. For the money, I think they're a great deal; knives that nice don't happen by programming a machine. In the end, somebody who cares bout the finished product has to put it together; it's obvious to me that these are a "labor of love" for whoever works on them. (That may sound dramatic, but there aren't many knife mfrs. out there I'd say that about.)

thx - cpr

ps - oh yeah - post pics, or we'll say real mean things about you 'til you do. I haven't had a new Mcusta in awhile. Be nice to see one here . . .

Hi all

I love them a LOT, but perhaps my judgement is imperfect as I don't know that much about knives just yet, and I wasn't able to compare to a a big number of other knives.

My first Mcusta (and in fact my first upmarket knife) is the MC-75D "Take". A splendid classic-looking knife with Mcusta's approach to damascus. Don't you love the katana-like handle? I know I must be in the minority, but I think that the colourful bag is amusing, it is a nice nod to older times:

I have it often in my pocket.

In addition I have the mcusta-made "Browning ice storm" pictured above, (also gave one as a birthday present) and I wonder if there is a better folding knife on the market at the current low price?
Furthermore I gave the stingray model to my father. I like the very modern design with again a nod to older times with the stylish stingray skin inlay:

This one is a very high quality knife, but the Browning is basically the same at a much lower price !

Finally I have one of their money clip knives.

I use these things for various "gentlemen"-like cutting tasks.
In short, I am very happy about them. Razor sharp, and in my opinion very well made. I have been wondering about moving up to something like a chris reeve knife which everyone raves about, and indeed they use a high end steel, but on the other hand I like these mcustas so much I cannot imagine that they can be seriously improved upon. Comments?

Absintheur,
Thank you for the info on the Browning Ice Storms and CDNN!
Just ordered one of the gold and one of the burgundy! One of the best bargains in the knife world that's out there - thank you!

Mcustas are great knives. No need to worry about quality for the money on those.

Even the Brownings retail for about 90...they are a good buy at the price cdnn prices. Not sure why the straight handle ones are higher...

I recently got a Mcusta Series 1 with the quincewood burl handles and the damascus blade.
I really love this knife. It looks good, the steel is of good quality and I love the blade shape. My only complaint is the quality of the liner lock. It is adequate, but nothing to say "wow" about. I would put it on par with my Kershaw Leek in that regard. The liner lock on my Benchmade Elishewitz Dark Star is far superior, and the one on my CRKT Kit Carson M21 is quite a bit better as well. That said, I carry this knife a lot. I feel it was good value for the money at $125. (Image is from the A.G. Russell website.)

The liner locks lock up tightly, but they don't look impressive. Based on looks alone, i wouldn't rate them as hard-use knives. They make an excellent gentleman's knife.

I got one on Aug. of 2004 with the same handle as Zuchus' above but with the plain VG10 blade. I really like it and it came very, very sharp. Also, I got it when AG Russell first put it on his site and it was $75 then. :)

Zuchus,
Can you tell what you don't like about the liner lock quality? I don't have experience with many other knives, but my impression was that the mcusta liner lock works well. Perhaps you think that it won't hold up against very hard use?

Dagon,

The liner itself is not as beefy as I'd like, but as chanwahyaoh pointed out above, it is more of a lighter use, "gentlemen's knife" so I guess that is not so big of an issue. I had a problem with mine initially locking up well - the liner only overlapped the blade by about 1/2 of the liner width, but after a hundred or so open-close cycles it now engages fully. As I said, it is comparable to my Kershaw Leek and is adequate. I'd just like something a little more "bank vault" like on a $125 knife.

It seems that a lot of makers, when they take a moderately priced knife and put out a premium version of it (such as with better steel and scales) they use the same lock hardware so you end up getting a $50 knife's liner lock on your $125 knife. I'm guess that the lock on mine is exactly the same as is on the $26.99 Browning version.

Thanks for the clarification, Zuchus!

From looking at the picture you provided above, it is most likely the same. i do think that these cheap Mcusta-made Brownings are on a fire sale, as it's not normal that they are that cheap for the quality!

I don't have one myself yet, but it's only a matter of time...:D

One of the bamboo-styled handles with a Damascus blade would definitely be nice! I even like the flowered pouch...;)

Ray :)

Got 2 basic folders, one in Ebony with Damascus.
Excellent fit&finish, I opted for models without the clip. Can't fault their locks compared to others but it's not a BM Axis of course....Fine knives for the collection and use in my view.
