is that what u guys use to measure blade thickness? if so, what setting do u put the caliper on, mm ect, just want to know so when i have enough time to finish my third knife i can share it with u guys and put all the measurements on here

thanks for all your help.

In North America, we usually measure in thousandths if an inch. I see many euro makers use mm.

That is what I use, however I am sure you could use a micrometer, I just find the caliper is easier and more useful. Mine is not digital so I only have imperial measurements. Being that you are based in the US, I would say stick with that.

Well I think that micrometer is better choice for this kind of measurment for me ......especially for measuring edge before and after sharpening knife . Set micrometer and try , set and try .........with caliper you a never 100% sure that you measured on right place on edge

My caliper has a locking screw. Well everyone I've ever owned for that matter. How is that so?

caliper all the way, faster, easier, more versatile. I like to use metric for length width and thickness behind the spine , but I prefer thousandths of an inch behind the edge! but I am also crazy so....

Caliper has a very thin measuring arms , how you will measure exactly the edg ? One tenth of a millimeter IN or not parallel arms with edge and does not read the true value ? Ok , never mind  As I wrote, for me micrometer is better instrument for this .

We can agree do disagree. The exact reason you don't like it the reason I prefer it. If I came across as condescending my apologies, that was not my intent, perhaps you have more experience than me. It just works better for me. I've been using precision measuring tools of various sorts for 25+ years. Im comfortable with the level of accuracy I get when using a caliper for this use.

Well, I've got both, 3 sets of calipers, and 3 (4?) micrometer. I tend to use mic for edge measurements, not sure why but it just seems to work easier for me. I do use calibers for many measurements.

Either seems to work just fine, as much as anything, it's just personal preference.

Antiquated!? You guys still haven't settled on a single language to speak yet!!! [emoji38]Although I do wish we'd just get on with it and embrace the metric system. I hate fractions!

Speak for your own country, you antiquated barbarians :p
antiquated are we, ehh? don't you still measure weight in stones? an isn't LaBlatts still sold in 12oz bottles?
to the subject at hand. decide on several distances to measure, i do the edge as best i can, then do 6mm and 12mm above the edge. my calipers have a notch in the jaws at 12mm so that one is easy to do. the calipers were made overseas and all the major dimensions are metric. 6mm is a tad shy of 1/4" and 12mm is a bit less than 1/2".

In my humble opinion it seems to me that after you make a lot of knives you don't need to measure the edge of your blades anymore. I can see how thick the edge is in good light and then finish the blade and mount scales, etch the mark, make the sheath, and then sharpen. If you mark your blades edge and grind to the lines before heat treat and after heat treat you grind down to an edge you want then why do you need to measure it? Am I missing a great secret about this? I use calipers too and measure for edge scribes in thousands of an inch and most electronic calipers now have a button to push for mm. Canadians are fine knife makers in my estimation and LaBatts Blue is a fine beverage. Larry

I fully agree with You...

I don't like flame wars of any kind. I think You guys see more practical imperial measurement because You grown with it. That is reason why Europeans use metric system. I can't judge which one is more practical, I used metric since I started to go into elementary school long time ago but when I have seen YT videos where guys used 2x4" instead of 50x100mm I liked it. :) But surely I will use metric when do anything need to be measured... Almost forgot: I use caliper instead I have micrometer too...
