Very nice stuff, STeven, but I guess that affordable is relative when it comes to Japanese blades.:D Assuming that I can figure out how to make a reasonable and functional facsimile of a Japanese sword, would someone in my position ever be able to recoup the cost of fittings or would I be better off just trying to nail the blade and a reasonable basic polish and have someone like Mr Lohman make a habaki and shira-saya and let the customer (assuming that I can find one;)) do the rest to their liking? Oh, by the way, thanks again for the heads up in those books. They are very well done and right up the alley of an info junkie like me. I am actually making a feeble attempt to roughy reproduce the basic shape and proportions of a Masamune tanto that was in one of them. Nothing like swinging for the fences the first time at bat, eh? It survived the quench all nice and straight, so that is a good start.:D

Fittings were never meant to be made by the blade forger...nor was the polish meant to be. You would be well served to learn habaki craft, other than that, leave it to those who do these things best.
