So I am about to get some knives. One of these is certainly going to be a Mercator K55K, I am just wondering if I should get the stainless or carbon steel version?
I am leaning towards carbon right now but would like some input first.

Get them both. Someone is selling a special version of that knife with a green finish on the handle. I think it is AG Russell but I am not sure.

Edit: The green handle version is from Ray Mears.

The brass handled version is really nice. Not sure if they come in SS though, mine was carbon steel.

Anybody have any idea what the steel used on the stainless is? The Brass Cat from "Best Made" seems to state C75 carbon - the manufactuer website states this too, but what about the stainless version?

I just found one with copper handles on the Otter Messer website.
http://www.otter-messer.de/shop/Mercator-Knife/--539.html?MODsid=2493f825e391906774e0ed55327e313b

They also offer a red handled version and a multi tool sort of SAK type one. And a brass one with Damascus steel.

Do they all lock?

EDIT

They do want like 60+ dollars for the knives. Worth it no doubt, save for the black ones which I know I can get stateside for around 20 dollars.

Never mind, I did not realize the number on their website was also the steel.

Stainless Steel - grade 1.4034 - I am not sure what I thought the 1.4034 was, I'll chock it up to being tired as hell and not paying attention.

I only have the classic black handled, carbon steel one. It performs excellently, and sharpens easily. I looked at the fancy ones, but the attraction of the k55k to me is that it's a work knife. It's not a design that admits of precious metals; it's a bit rough in finish, and unsophisticated. But a great worker.

The price is also what is appealing for such quality, similar knives as well. Might get a brass and copper one in the carbon, and a black stainless - The damascus one has appeal to me but it loses that price appeal for more of an artistic one. I would not mind owning it, but I could get much better knives for that price point so I doubt I would buy it unless I somehow satisfied every other knife urge at that price range, and I doubt that is possible..........

I gots the carbon. I carry it along with 2 other knives at work. It's my go to for lending and general use. I strop it on balsa with green compound to maintain the edge. Very thin disappears in my back pocket.

I carried a carbon one for years when the Len co. sold it for 3.95 or 4.95,forget which. It was thin easy pocket carry and sturdy enough to pry off axle grease caps.Wish I still had it.Very practical.
