Mess kits

my two favorite cooking equipment is one of the military canteen cup, i like the stainless steel but have used the aluminum, my most versatile item, the next thing i use for packing in is a german/swedish/norwegian mess kit, bigger and will let you cook or make soup or beans or ramen or juast about anything you want to cook. for car camping i like some cast iron skillet and dutch oven.

I carry a metal cup around the bottom of my nagalene 32 oz bottle. I also carry an aluminum mini-loaf pan (folded flat) and a Light-My-Fire spork. Oh yeah, I might have a knife or six...

I take J A Henckels Camp Utensils but for some reason I cannot find them on the net.

Lexan spoon and fork. I tried the LMF spork but found the rewards few. I carry a home made pepsi can stove and windscreen, packed into a K-Mart grease pot. The setup can bring 2 cups of water to a rolling boil in 4 1/2 minutes, good enough for me.

I use a 5 piece mess kit that I got from walmart a long time ago. It's gone with me on all my trips for camping and hiking. Light as a feather and easy to clean.

Right now, my pot is a USGI canteen cup. But I'm taking a serious look at the Snow Peak titanium trek 700 (.7 liter) w/lid, or the trek 900 (.9 liter) with lid that works as fry pan or plate. Hoping I'll get one of them for Christmas.

Longbow, it's funny you mention the Snow Peak ti stuff. A stainless steel fan for years, I finally broke down and invested in a couple Snow Peak titanium items today to go with my new canister stove. I had resisted the titanium gear for a long time, but as I got more and more into the lightweight concept, I began to look closer at these items.

Otherwise, I've always favored stainless steel stuff. A .75 or 1.0 liter pot and a bottle cup or Cascade cup are what I've been using.

I have a small stainless steel silverware set that gave way to Lexan utensils a number of years ago. Last year I bought an REI ti spork, and even it use at home as well as out and about.

I'm not much of a fan of the sporks, but might invest in a 4 pack of the light-my-fire models. Been using bamboo chopsticks and they don't weigh but .6oz, along with a couple plastic spoons.

I always have the titanium Trek700 to drink out of. And then it is just a question of if I bring another pot, and what kind of pot. Pot selection is controlled by what kind of food I'll be eating.

I have either the Primus Techno Trail kit or the swedish army mess kit or a Trangia food box with handle and a Esbit stove. I also bring an MRE spoon, a light-my-fire spork, a stainless steel mug and some swedish folding cups.
The Swedish mess kit is like a tank. The 1844 style was made in copper and a bit higher and thinner. The current aluminium model is from 1940. Stainless versions were made 1940-44.
The complete kit consists of the windscreen, the big kettle, the lid/small kettle, burner, fuel bottle, knife/fork/spoon, a kuksa mug, a can opener and a kitchen towel.
They also make a great kit for emergency preparedness, they cost nothing.

I was REI in Marina today and saw a new primus propane stove with a flux ring type pot. Looked pretty cool. I do wish it would come with the neoprene cozy like the Optimus Terra.

I planned on going up to the Marina store this afternoon. Got a list of stuff I want to check out before I let my wife loose in there to do any Christmas shopping. :D

The Marina store is small and doesn't carry nearly the gear San Jose does. I was disapointed. (Though I did walk out with a full bag of stuff. :D)

Have you made it to Mel Cotton's yet?

Was watching the movie "The Longest Day" and British
soldier was eating out of a rectangular kit. Did UK issue these?
Who else issued rectangular kits?

Those Brit messkit tins are great for packing a survival kit in. I used one to carry my kit while x-c skiing. Mine has a non-stick lid and a pouch. ebay should have used ones and BCB should have them new. They are nice kit.
