Good morning: I'm looking for ideas for metal dust collection without spending a boatload on specialized equipment. Hope y'all have some ideas. Thank you.

The simplest method is a tall metal trash can or similar container with a couple inches of water in it directly under the grinder.
Better is a spark bong and a good size shop-vac.

Use the custom search engine in the stickys to search "spark bong" and "dust collection" . Tghere are dozens of threads on this subject with may plans and ideas.

Good morning, and welcome, deno.
Count's suggestion to use the custom search engine in the stickies is a good idea. There are a number of ways to skin this cat.
The cost will kind of depend on how much dust you want to catch. What I (and others) do is keep a 5 gallon bucket of water right under the grinder when grinding metal. I also have my grinder stand set up so that when grinding wood or handles, I can hook up a shop vac that has the small nozzle fixed right underneath the bottom wheel on my platen and when the filter isn't clogged, this catches most of the wood dust.

I just ordered one of these. It works with a normal vacuum cleaner. It is claimed that 99% gets seperated.
Still waiting for it to be dilivered, so no actual experience with it.

I got the setup including the metal drum in Germany but you can get the top part that does the job on Aliexpress or Ebay. (Some people make theire own)
Search for "zyklon scheider" on Aliexpress, click on one and switch back to English.
The vacuum goes in the top, the dirty air goes in the side and the dirt goes down in the drum.
the drum needs to be airtight and strong, plastic is usually not strong enough.

Thnx for the tip I'll put water in the drum.

Here are some ideas on youtube. some are more about using a gate to close off the dust collector when generating sparks. The one I am interested in is routing everything through water bath

This one, but He also has a true spark arrestor in line.

Cushing made a spark bong on his own. I'm going to build that once I get my house built. https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/spark-bong-question-wip-construction.1755231/page-2.

Collecting metal dust is important. My son left the car battery charger about 10 feet from my grinder. I just had a bucket of water under the grinder. I ground 8 blades and a few weeks later he plugged the charger in and there was a small buzz and nothing. It's dead. I'm going to collect sparks in my new shop.

Those cyclone dust deputy's are pretty cheap. I live in Canada and I can pick one up for about $25. https://www.amazon.ca/Efficiency-Co...ocphy=9001486&hvtargid=pla-790949464966&psc=1

Where do you all get the flexible metal hoses for dust collection? Only place I've found is Rockler, but the price seems really high...

i am not sure if metal hoses like clothes dryer hoses are safe, i think they are aluminum. aluminum and the steel dust might create a thermite (fire) hazard? i use the dryer hose on my system but only to my workbench, where there are no sparks.

I think BRab BRab is talking about the Spiral Pipe and Fittings from Rockler, which are made from steel according to the product description. I have been looking at those recently as well.

Got all the parts together today. Now all I need is my new grinder and I'll be able to tell you how it works :)
I ordered the "dust commander" fixed on the metal drum. Big advantage is that they also sell adapters in all thinkable sizes.

I'll place the vacuum in a different room to keep the noice down. May even build sound isolation around it.

This is where I got everything.
zwiezyklon.de
The inlets are 50mm.
I'll be using 100mm tube to suck the dirty air off. The vacuum I have has a 32mm inlet.
Got the adapters with the dust-commander/metal bin.
Only thing is the 100mm tube fits on to the adapter, not in or over it, so there will be a bit of duct-tape after all :)
