Micarta Modern Folders

I really don’t know why Micarta seems to have become a fixed blade thing and g10 a folder thing. Maybe that is just the way the universe evolved?

So maybe there is a parallel universe where it is rare to see g10 on a folder.
...and there's a group of knife-obsessed inhabitants of a doppelganger planet talking about a parallel universe where, um, oh, forget it.

Well I'm carrying my Sebenza 21 insingo with micarta inlays today. I saw the LionSteel TM-1 is carved out of a solid chunk of micarta I might have to get one.

SK Knives has a Buck Vantage up for preorder right now with brownish natural micarta and 20CV steel. Ordered one a couple days ago.

Apparently (over on the manufacturer's forum) Reate is teaming up with Kirby Lambert and one of the prototypes has micarta scales with a sub-frame lock. Probably will be introduced at Blade.

You know anything about it? Looks to be a liner lock but is there a flipper tab? Not much info at their site.

Whoops - never mind - found it. The Buck Vantage is all over Amazon and this new model (Maverick) is the Buck Vantage Pro large with better steel and micarta scales.

I'm very much in the same situation - love me some micarta but it's often hard to find.

As others have mentioned, getting custom scales for production folders is one option. Ripp's Garage Tech does micarta scales for Spyderco PM2, and there are a number of craftsmen on this forum who do the same for several Benchmade models.

As far as knives that come stock with micarta, the only one I can think of worth mentioning is Shirogorov, in particular their F3R model. At least amongst the models available through their US dealer, they only recently upgraded the F3 to include multi-row bearings (the F3R series), and so far it's only been available in carbon fiber and python micarta, which I'm not a fan of (looks like a weird skin disease...). I'm definitely interested in a green or natural micarta F3R, if they ever make it to the US.

There are a number of custom makers that work with micarta, who's knives aren't crazy expensive. Walter Wells and Tobin Smith immediately come to mind, and I'm sure there are others.

EnZo Birk 75 has a couple of micarta offerings. It's also a great knife.

Weird - I knew the Birk came in white paper micarta (which is too smooth to really give you the benefit of micarta, IMO), but I didn't realize there was an OD green canvas version until you mentioned it. Just ordered - thanks for sharing! :)

What in the holy hell is that :p

A Viper Maga, as I said when I posted it. :p
It's marketed as a Fighting Knife/Self Defense Knife, the divot is for rotation/indexing that knife, the hook works like a wave feature. It was apparently designed in conjunction with some Krav Maga Expert, hence the name. I think it's kinda neat, unusual looking for sure though. I don't have one, from what I read Vipers QC/F&F is good but not great. But it certainly qualifies as a modern folder with micarta.

Did anyone mention Fantoni yet? They have a few I believe. Edit* I looked the Rumici Hide is the only one I could come up with and it's hard to find a dealer.

Vantages have had mixed reviews over the years. I have had two and both were very nice knives, but neither was a great flipper. If you are very set on an extraordinarily flipper then you should probably pass, but if you just treat it as a nice liner lock with a guard you will be satisfied.

There are a few options out there.

I've also found aftermarket alternatives to make my own.

Canvas Micarta is one of my favorite handle materials. I've added a few aftermarket scales to my own blades.

The SOG Kiku Folder also features Micarta scales, but the blade shape and grind aren't for everyone.
