I almost had it! Last night I ordered M. Echanis's book "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" (the black book) off the Amazon site. They said it was on the way...until I received another e-mail today saying they had sold it to someone else! So does anyone know where I might find a copy in decent shape?

Well, I should have guessed. Alibris just sent a cancellation notice too...so I'm still looking to find Michael Echanis's book "Knife Fighting Knife Throwing for Combat" Any leads would be appreciated!

Hi Guys
Last time i saw this book offered for sale it was US$ 350, that about $700 of the Pacific pesos that we call money in NZ.If you find a copy I would be interested in a good copy (for personal study only)Its odd that the other books in this series are either still in print or easily available second hand, but this one is so rare.

There was a thread on that book sometime back in Practical Tactical IIRC. It seems Ohara are a bunch of PC wimps and pulled it from publication because it was "too dangerous."

My latest intel showed that the book was selling in good to fine condition on Amazon and Alibris for only $50.00. I just missed both of these and they ended up being sold to someone else.

Actually, they pulled it because Echanis' family, after his death, wanted to renegociate the royalty for the book and no reasonable agreement could be reached between all the parties then involved at the time.

This according to Randy Wanner in a past interview I did with him in Coronado, California.

The "too dangerous" thing was an artsy way of explaining why it ain't out there no more.

That makes more sense. I was wondering how that book could be any more dangerous than the many knife fighting books out there. I'd say that is much more than just bending the truth unless the "too dangerous" part is that it would be risking a lawsuit to continue publish it without the family's permission.

What about ordering a copy through your library? Most libraries can borrow books from other libraries.

I second that request, and I'm very interested to know why this book is so highly sought after.

Hi Guys
Should have pointed out that i am in New Zealand. Our librarians would be horrified at such a request.Would still like a copy in any condition or a photo=copy

It is a hot item because (1) it is very hard to find and (2) it has a rich cult following due to the Echanis legend (myth?).

As pointed out in an earlier post there are many new and far more instructive books and videos available now than when the "black book" was released. However, the Echanis legend is very strong and when combined with Hwa Rang Do and Soldier of Fortune...well, it's great marketing.

The 2nd book on knifework is pretty much an extension of the first (no more or less dangerous;) ) but it is the red book on stick fighting that is really quite good.

The black book is an interesting read (thanks to Randy Wanner, its behind the scenes author and Echanis' actual HWD instructor) and it's kool to have a copy in one's library.

Keep your eyes on Ebay. I've seen them come up there a couple of times a year. As a matter of fact I've thought about selling one of mine there also (however it currently isn't for sale)

Good luck they definitely are hard to find.

Edited to add, I see there is currently one on Ebay but it is in Australia.
