Last winter Dave, (pinnah) sent me a Leatherman Mirca. We'd been having a ongoing disagreement on the micra vs the classic and Dave took the high ground in a brilliant flanking maneuver. He sent me a micra to try out, knowing full well that a freebie tool will be put to hard use. I tried no to let him down. I used the ever lovin' dog poo outa the thing.

I really didn't like it at first, but I could see the advantages. Little by little it started to find it's way input my pocket edc rotation. I'd carry the micra and then the classic was back on duty. But over the months, the micra would little by little end up in my pocket. Sometimes it just got there, and I have n idea how. But it grew on my in a steady increasing amount.

Now, 8 months later, it has become rare that the classic is on my keyring. The unthinkable has happened. The other day I looked at my classic, and I put it in the sock drawer. This in itself is a definitive turn of events. For me, the sock drawer is the Long term storage/obsolite stuff bin that will eventually be gotten rid of as no longer used gear. For the classic to go in the sock drawer, is a turning point. It means a decision has been made that I have switched flags.

I am now a Leatherman micra fan, with the squirt coming in a close second.

It's been a long road with a few bumps along the way, but the micra has been just too effective to deny the advantages. More rugged construction, and better tools. Like my evolution from Smith and Wesson revovers to Glock pistols, I now realize that just because you've always used brand X, doesn't mean you can't change to brand Z when it just does the job better.

So, now after 8 months of steady experimentation, the Vic classic has been semi officially retired, and the Leatherman micra is on duty. The Leatherman squirt is on standby.

I dremeled the knife blade off a Micra and now its my air travel edc.--KV

Carl, I have recently found myself in the same boat. I jut got a Leatherman Squirt and it has knocked the Classic into the red box on the shelf. So, the Pioneer and Squirt is the new EDC for me.

It's funny how life takes it's twists and turns isn't it? I've had the same battered Leatherman Classic on my belt daily for the past 21 years, so it fills the bill for any pliers-related tasks or if I need a file or screwdriver that the Vic Farmer isn't suited for. So the pocket knife does the cutting and light tasks and the Leatherman takes on the more abusive situations.

Likewise  on the Micra, my most used keychainer for the last 17 years when I first paired it with a Super Tool. It supplied just the right supplementary tools and was not bad on its own whenever not possible or advisable to carry anything else. But my Rambler still gets some pocket time, depending on what else I'm carrying, to supply the little things that Leathermen don't. Also, I like the magnetized small ph driver, and the bottle opener actually works. I never liked the Classic. It was too minimal for me, considering that in the same space you could put a Rambler. That, and for some reason I found the keyring being on blade pivot to be irritating.

This is awesome! I did the exact same thing. I was nearly compelled to get a micra because of Pinnah's damned preconditining. LMAO. It's like he had that double Opinel and Micra photo on permanent cut and paste mode whenever he needed to post a suggestion for an EDC. So I ended up getting one.

Sadly the preconditioning didn't work on me, the force is too strong within me! But lo and behold, everyday there lies a Squirt in my knapsack right next to my pen light! So the programming did in fact take in part!!! I also have an Opinel garden saw after picking up a #9 and a #8 as well as a garden #8 Opinel too.

Carl -

Though you are still young and supple, most of us as we age tend to migrate toward smaller and lighter EDC. You seem to be going in the opposite direction (Classic > Micra/PS4 and S&W J-frame > baby Glock). Maybe its because you started out small, whereas many or most people tend to start out big and then downsize with the passage of time.

The way things are going, you might have an ST300 on your belt in 10 years.

:D:D:D

Yeah, my dad always said I had a tendency to do things a$$ backwards. Going from a classic to a micra is going to something about twice the weight. However, my S&W miodel 60 was within a few ounces of what the baby Glock weighs in at, plus the Glock is way more accurate and holds 10 vs 5 rounds. But it is a bit more bulky. I can't drop it in a pocket like the little J frame. Hey, maybe I need to buy a new pocket pistol! :D

I think Carl's minimalism will take hold once he learns of the Keyman mod that puts all the useful tools into one handle and cuts the weight by more than half. That will sacrifice the scissors, which I personally don't see as much loss.

I personally think that the Micra is the best tool that Leatherman makes. I've had one for maybe 15 years, but it's mostly lived in my work bag. It's seen occasional use, and IMO for substantial cutting, the Micra's scissors are superior; but for fine, precision cutting, my Vic Executive's scissors are superior. I think the Micra's tweezers are mostly better, and you won't lose them. They're both different tools that can complement each other well, if I chose to pocket carry my Micra again. However, I don't see it as an either/or situation. Even if I carried my Micra again as an EDC, I'd still carry my Executive.

By "Leatherman Classic" are you referring to the original Leatherman PST or is there a Leatherman model called the Classic?

Newbie here but I've been a long time lurker. Great forum--one of the most enjoyable and informative I've found.

The Micra is a bit long in the tooth by Leatherman standards, but I still think it's probably the best tool they make, squeezing a whole lot of function into a tidy, compact package. Limited and slow to deploy as it is, it's been a better user, and more reliable than their more modern keychain sized tools. I still carry the Classic/Esquire sometimes, particularly when size really matters. But the Micra covers the bases better overall.

A true classic, IMO.

Hey, maybe I need to buy a new pocket pistol! :D

Thread drift alert.

I have only done pocket carry for the last 10 years.

Current stable: S&W 442. Ruger LCP. Kel-tec PF9. Kahr PM9. Glock 26. Ruger SP-101. S&W Shield 9mm. Each in the appropriate Uncle Mike's pocket holster.

A true classic, indeed. I got mine in 1998 for the scissors and other implements to supplement my Super Tool, and those two were my EDC for the next 9 years. From the start, I thought it was an almost perfect keychain tool, the only knock on it being that it kept trying to chew its way out of my jeans 5th pocket (never succeeded, but left holes.) Once I got the leather slip for it, though, that became a non-issue. Now, 18 years later, my original Super Tool has been replaced twice by improved models, but I'm still with the same Micra. I've tried others, but always came back. That's the one Leatherman tool they got right first time out.

Carl, if turn about is fair play, at your recommendation, I tried a full sized Sodbuster. Don't tell the folks in the trad forum, but it's pretty much replaced the Opinel 9'as my EDC knife.

The force reshifted to balance out.

Well, there's at least a few of us still holding out against Team L. After sending Carl my PS4 (I think it was), I ended up getting another for a stupidly cheap price on the 'bay. Tried it for a week on end — aaaand back to the Vic Classic. I even tried a Micra; same result.

I find they're just ungainly, awkward lumps in the pocket. If you love 'em, more power to you. But no love here.

Not many things in this world are for everybody. My wife dislikes the Micra so bad that once while we we out she asked for scissors to trim her toenails, and because all I had on me then was a Micra, she preferred to do without. She doesn't like Leathermen in general, thinks they are too "industrial" (kind of one reason I like them :)) and prefers her Climber SAK, but seldom carries that these days, partly because she can rely on me for gadgets when we are away from home. The one exception to her Leatherman hate is a Squirt S4. She likes it because it is small, less "industrial," and the scissors are strong enough for toenail clipping. In fact, she had the S4 a few month before realizing there were other implements on it. Now, she uses the knife as well, sometimes. I'm the only one to have used all the other tools. But I must admit she has a point. Hand tools should be hand friendly, and Leatherman sacrifices a bit of that for tool effectiveness. I accept the tradeoff, but my wife will not so much.

I do understand, and I'm just glad there's all this variety out there for people to pick and choose from. Thanks!

I forced my micra today. Urged to cut four double strap zip-ties and couldn't take out my Pacific salt (dedicated EDC and tough stuff cutter) because of the people around me, so I slowly pulled out my Micra and very discreetly went for it.
It cut through the tough plastic way easier than I thought, did very little noise. Took the zip ties with my micra back to the pocket, nobody noticed.

I was doubting on whether carrying this as my small EDC Multitool or my Gerber Dime. After today's little test I have made my mind.

A true classic, indeed! After the Wave, it's my favorite leatherman. Always been.

Pinnah, as your affection for the Opi 9 is legendary, all will not be right in the universe until you start a thread in the trad forum 'splainin' your conversion. :D Which soddie did you get and, more importantly, in what ways do you find it superior to the Opi 9? Inquiring minds want to know. :p
