I was just wondering what the grit size was for :10 micron, 5 micron, 3 micron, 1 micron, .5 micron? Thanks!!!

Here is a little chart I found a while back. Oops, doesn't go low enough :)

Grade Approximate Comparison Print
(micron) ANSI FEPA Color
9 1200 P2000 lt. blue
15 600 P1200 orange
20 500 P1000 red
30 400 P500 green
40 320 P400 blue
50 240 P320 purple
60 220 P240 black
80 180 P180 black
100 150 P150 black

there is no single answer. do you want CAMI, FEPA, mesh, JIS, or some other scale? for example - 0.5 micron can be 30,000 or 60,000, depending on who you ask.

Technically it should be straightforward, grit is the number of the round holes that fit in 1". And then as usual variations "happen"...

Thanks for the input. I was just wondering because I was going to go with 400, 800, 2000 grit wet/dry sandpaper and then finish with a strop. But my strop is loaded with 1 micron paste and I didn't know if that was too low or not.

So going by the last chart posted....2000 grit wet/dry is the same as my strop loaded with 1 micron diamond paste?

That's what it looks like to me. I've noticed that similar grits/micron sizes "behave"
differently ( and on different steels) depending on the sharpening medium used (ie : stones, paste , compound , etc.)
