I had a couple of the original Amphibians when they first came out and somehow let them go over the years but managed to pick a new old stock 2004 model recently in a trade deal. I missed out on the intro of the recent updated Amphibian; I had no idea that they were re-introducing them. It looks like they made a 'Prototype run' of a few different variations on the new model, and I just picked up one of the basic ones, NIB here on BladeForum. I think they will put out a regular production run of them and hopefully I can get my hands on a non-serrated model.

The most obvious diferences in shape / design are evident in these pictures. But I will point out a couple of big ones. The lock on the old model is the old MT style hinged liner lock while the new model has there Ram lock style plunge block lock. Both lock types are pretty solid but the newer Ram-lock lets you open the knife easier.

Handle material is Aluminum on the original and G-10 on the new prototypes although there are some custom versions with CF handles as well as Titanium, but they are very pricey.

Blade Material on the original is S30V, there were some other materials used like 154CM. The new one sports M390MK, and I am not sure what is used on the custom versions, probably the same but with different finishing, although I saw pics of one with a blackened Damascas blade.

Size of the blade on the Original was 3.75" and at least 3.875 on the new model with a little more recurve to the belly of the blade. Both are very sharp from the factory.

LOA - The old model is 8.375" while the new model is 9.25", when open.

General grip feel - Both have heavy jimping on the handles that helps provide a very good grip. They are each pretty solid in the hand. The original has a bit more of a curve to it's wider handle but is basically flat on both sides with a smooth anodized aluminum finish and rubber inserts on one side, typical of Microtech knives of that era. The new model has a similar curve to the grip but the G-10 seems grippier even though it is machined pretty smooth. It is also contoured along the width rather than the flat sides of the older version, So to me it just seem to fit the hand better.

The pocket clip on the new model is interchangeable to either side while the original model is not.

I like both of these knives quite a bit but I think that the new one is probably the best new model that Microtech has put out in a long time. Thanks MT; now keep 'em coming, I need a plain edge model!

Regards, Vince

I had an original Amphibian Auto years ago, should’ve never let it go, it was a great knife.
I scored one of the Prototype models last week when they dropped, missed the CF by moments; as I was paying it sold out, very frustrating. I ended up with a black G10 partially serrated model that I’ll end up selling soon since I scored a coyote G10 plain edge this week.
The Coyote one showed up today and I couldn’t be more happy with it, which is probably pretty obvious since I liked the prototype enough to try for a plain edge model this week.
I bought an MSI several weeks ago off of the MT website, just a Black G10, frag, plain edge- vanilla model. I like that knife a lot, nothing to criticize about it other than I like the Amphibian more.
I think that MT has been hitting home runs with the first releases of the Ram Lok!
My buddy bought a Ram Lok Stitch and that knife is really done well too. Hopefully we’ll see a LUDT release too. I don’t think that he couid jam the Ram Lok into that design but I’d be interested in one if he could.

I wore out my original Amphibian and for some reason never replaced it. I will get the new production release when they release.

They’re out. I grabbed one from MT 2 weeks ago. It’s bigger than the original but still a great knife.

They may have been out a few weeks ago but the only ones available now are the customs that run up around $3000. I want a relatively standard model..

does the ram lock amphibian have a weak detent like the msi, the blade falls out of the msi very easily which really bothered me and could not be fixed by tightening the pivot

I also have an MSI and wish that the detent was a little better. I bought the Prototype Amphibian 3 weeks ago and then the production version in the pics above the next week. Those are the only two that I’ve had my hands on and both had better detents than my MSI. If I really tried I could probably get the blade to open with a very hard wrist flick but that’s partly due to it being a large and heavy blade. After owning axis lock knives for decades I would’ve liked if Tony had adjusted the geometry of all the Ram Lok knives so that they held closed just a little bit better but I’m very happy with the Amphibian and do feel that it is better than
The MSI. My buddy has a Ram Lok Stitch and it is also nicer than the MSI. Hopefully that issue is only an MSI issue due to the way that the edge terminates into the locking surface.
I wouldn’t hesitate to buy the amphibian if you can find one.

As far as I know they have not made the decision to put the knife into regular production. I wrote an email to say that I really liked the knife and hoped that they would put it into regular production. They sent one back saying that they appreciated the contact but that the decision to make it a regular model had not been made yet. If any of you feel the same as I do about it, please do the same; it could not hurt.

I snagged a tan G-10 plain edge today. I'll let know what I think when I get it. That tab lock on the old Amphibian was great, powered by coil springs. Better than a frame lock IMHO. I never liked the Benchmade axis lock but the Ram works for me.

I find the detent on my Stitch Ram to be fine. I don't like the gritty feel opening the knife. Appears to be due to a rough ram face. Not bad enough to get me to take it apart to polish the surface.

Congrats on getting one!
I missed the drop today or I would’ve tried for the carbon fiber version.
I like the knife enough that I would’ve kept the tan G10 and the CF if I had snagged one. I’m a sucker for CF but that tan G10 is done so nicely that I know I’d regret it if I let it go.

My MSI felt gritty at first too, but it has broken in and become incredibly smooth. I got an Amphibian in yesterday's drop, so I'll see how that comes.

I got my Amphibian today and it is as smooth as can be. My Gen 1 Stitch is getting better with use.

The Amphibian is a spectacular knife.

How is the detent? I want one, but if the extent is light, then I may wait/hope for an auto version

Do these run on bearings or Phosphor washers? My guess is bearings. If so, I wonder if I could convert it to PB....

My Amphibian works like it is supposed to work. Under normal attempts the blade will not drop. If you put a lot of wrist action in, the blade will flip out into lock.

There is no ball detent on a Ram Lock. The lock spring pressure on the tang holds the blade locked when it is closed.

If you hold the lock unlocked the blade swings freely.
