Hello,
I have a question regarding Microtech Socom Alphas (fixed blades). Does any of you tried to remove the handle slabs? Are they glued to the tang or just attached with screws? If only attached - what driver bit did you use? Was the steel under the scales protected in any way?
I have a socom alpha in XHP and even though I realize it's a stainless steel, I have some concerns about rust forming under the scales. Should I be worried or just disregard it? I really like this knife and I use it quite frequently as an all-arounder.
I tried to contact Microtech directly about it but got no response to my e-mails.

I have no experience with this type of knife.
I have other knives with similar steel and I wouldn't worry too much.
the only blades that I have had problems of this type are those with bead blast finishes, otherwise stonewash or similar very difficult for rust to attack and I live near the sea
 
Thank you - you are most probably right, but I've seen even m390 rust under scales (although on a custom knife - not Microtech), and I would like to know how is it with the Microtech. And are the slabs removable or permanently glued?
 
Don’t quote me on it, but I believe the bit you need is the one for the old Socom Deltas. PVK sells them, might be worth emailing them to see if it fits both knives. As far as what’s under the handles, I’m not sure. My Alpha is DLC coated and I kinda doubt they glue the scales onto the tang itself.
 
Thank you! I'll contact PVK. I also think the slabs are not glued to the tang. But to my surprise for example TRC does glue the slabs. So I would like to be sure, before spending money on the bit. Also I'm wondering is eventual rust under the scales of socom alphas a problem at all? Does anyone have problem with it on this knives?

I know this is an old thread but also wondering if I need to think about dealing with rust under non-removeable scales on my TRC. I didn't know they glued them on? Does that act the same as an epoxy?
