Looking at getting a Socom Elite, can't decide between the auto or the manual. Anybody have either? Looking for the tougher / harder use option.

I have both a manual & an auto. I really like auto's, but in this case, I would recommend getting a manual, as it's a much more practical knife. If it's for self defense however, definitely the auto!

Either way, you can't go wrong.:thumbsup:

I also have one of each, I prefer the manual, very smooth action, easy to open, the auto button is difficult to actuate.

I just picked up an auto version and have been liking it. Haven't noticed an probs actuating the button. Also had a manual version that was very well made but sold it since I already have a manual Socom Delta. I'd say go for the auto if it's practical for your usage.

Love my auto, and especially love that the button IS difficult (no way I could ever imagine unintentionally opening or unlocking this one). I prefer the clip side scale of the auto - would be cool if they would make a button-lock manual version with the auto's clip side scale.

Thanks fellas, seems like most say go with the manual, so that's what I'll go with.

I just got an Ultratech literally today! I've also got a Protech auto, so may make sense to go manual here anyway.

I just got a manual Socom on Friday and I can't stop messing with it.

I had to get the Sweet Violet one from DLT, as it was the only manual model they had left.

ETA: I have an auto showing up today hopefully and it is all Officer's Match Officer's Match fault!

Both choices are great. All depends on what action floats your boat.

1 note about the manual - the titanium lockbar insert increases the weight of the handles, which makes the manual better balanced. My autos are slightly heavier in front. Either way great knife.

In 1999 I bought my first Microtech Socom Folder and then in about 2002 I gave it to my younger son who is an Eagle Scout and had destroyed a CRKT M16 that I had given him. He still owns that knife and it is tight, sharp and fully functional, no matter how hard he has tried to break it. Even the finish is in pretty good condition considering the age and beating that this old knife has taken.

I bought another one about a year ago and it is a great knife. I also have a couple of the Socom fixed blade models and I like them as well.

Manual no question. You mentioned hard use so the less parts the better. I'm not sure what kind of deployment system their autos use but it surely will be more complex then a straight manual folder of course.

Personally I've always found good smooth folders just as fast to deploy as autos, if not more. No searching for a button, just grip and flick

My thumbs are sore! Dang this Ultratech is hard to open/close. Maybe it will loosen up some.

My new Socom Elite Auto is firing like a dream! Fast deployment and solid lockup.

I am eyeballing an Ultratech hard tho, the Socom just won out at the last minute.

I plan on getting the Socom also, guess I gotta wait until my thumbs are no longer bleeding!
