Gday guys,

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I'm just curious if anyone here has had any experience using military gun-oil on their knives? Specifically, Australian Army gun-oil (Nycolube 127 - http://www.deutsche-nyco.de/pdf/Dok...OLUBE%20NL%20127%20-%20Version%2003.06.09.pdf). I can get this stuff by the bucketload, but Tuf-Glide, I have to purchase a small bottle from The States (shipping costs three times more than the bottle itself...)

I've just purchased some Tuf-Glide (but is yet to arive from the States) so when it arrives, I'll do a back to back comparo....

Does anyone know if this is similar to what the US guys use in their Marines/Army/AirForce/Navy???
And, does it work on knives as well as some other (more expensive) products?

I'm assuming Tuf-glide doesn't actually stay wet, but rather, dries off to leave a protective coating rather than a wet layer??

Cheers,

Dan.

Gun oil like motor oil becomes thinner when heat is induced, good for gun and motors but on things like knife pivots where that property is not a factor the oil is not as effective as it should be. The attraction of dirt and a sticky/gummy action are usually the result of using such a lube.

What a lube is best at does not always seems to be in ones consideration. I use Benchmade blue lube because it was made for knives, its the best I have found and works properly.

I have never used tufglide or do I know its intended purpose but have heard its good stuff, though somewhat of a pain to apply.

Yeah, I also use blue lube. I got it because I was having trouble finding the other brands that had been recommended to me, and it was relatively cheap for a good amount. Plus it's really easy to apply and see. Lasts a lot longer too if you use the cleanser on the parts where you're going to apply it.

I've heard that TufGlide is really good for corrosion resistance. I've been meaning to find one of the "kits" they sell with the TuffClothes to try it out.

Thanks guys,

I think I'll just stick to mineral oil to clean it, then a touch up with Tuff-glide.
(The Nycolube has to be kept up every few weeks/months depending on the humidity, and it leaves a sticky gooey layer on the knife, let alone the nylon sheath....ergh....)

I have used CLP,Miltec and surplus rifle grease on my knives at one time or another. I think the best all around of those is CLP. The Miltec was a little too thick and the grease was only good for storing but came in little containers that were very easy to store.

I recently heard that firstly cleaning with baby oil, then lubing up the exposed edge (on coated blades) with Vaseline was a good effective way of storing knives for several months to years, especially under humid conditions.
Thoughts?
