Hey guys I'm looking in to buying an LED AA mini mag and just wanted to get your opinions on it. I'm getting it because it is cheap, has great battery life, and is tough as nails. Tell me what you guys think of the light so I can get some people's general opinions on it. thanks.

i've found these to be brighter, smaller, cheaper, and a better SD wep than the mini mags

they are very good for the money and i have 1 as a EDC

I have a number of high end flashlight including surefire and streamlight but also have 2 mini mag led lights and have nothing but good things to say about them. An additional advantage to the purchase price is that the light uses aa batteries.

I have other higher end flashlights I prefer to use, but for around $20 a LED mini mag is a good little flashlight.

4Sevens has become my favorite flashlight company. :) Fenix, Surefire, Olight, Jetbeam, and Streamlight are some others I have.

I have had a mini mag for over 20 years and have nothing but good things to say about it. About 5 years ago I replaced the stock bulb with an LED replacement.

But...there is a 1 AA Energizer LED at Target for about $16. It is bright, tough, cheap and has a lifetime guarantee. It has become my go-to edc light. Look into that one before you decide!

I've had a lot of trouble with the latest batch of LED mini mags. Intermittent operation. If you can find the ones with the lanyard hole on the back I'd go for it. Avoid the ones with the flat tailcap.

I like buying an incandescent mini mag and installing a Terra-Lux LED better. It's a little more expensive, but you get better performance.

I have had the same experience with a recent mini-mag. It was very picky on how far you twisted the head to turn it on. It only had about a 10 deg arc where it would stay on. Turn it too far or not far enough and it would either not light up or flicker badly. Gave up on it and bought a Streamlight Stylus Pro (at least I think thats the model name) Much happier with it, I like that it has a much slimmer profile than the Mini-Mag. It may be an AAA light though, I can't remember as my wife liked it when she saw it and I haven't seen it since.

If you already have an old style mini maglite you can get a CREE upgrade kit from battery junction.
I got the upgrades for my mini & 3D maglites and couldn't be happier.

I've never had a positive opinion of Minimags. For what I spent in my youth on buying new lights and new bulbs I could have bought a Surefire at age 13. The LED technology of today would have blown my 13 year old mind.

I'm a big fan of the led mini-mag. I have one w/lanyard hole and one w/o and haven't had any problems with either, personally. I also had a 3xAA variant, but it was single mode and I therefore liked it less and let it go. I also have a 3xD led Maglite, and it's a killer value too. My opinion is that these are great American made led lights for a very good price. A AAA led version from Maglite would be interesting, but for now, the Fenix EO1 has it's place on my keys. -The Solitaire is beyond obsolete.

The Fenix or the Nebo can't be beat.! Gave away all my other lights and replaced them with these and as of the last 2 years I have not had the first problem.
My .02 worth on the subject.*

Every single Maglite I have has either taken a dump on it's own , or was so ridiculously dim that I bought an 'upgrade' from sources like Nite eyez only to have those fail too.
I will never buy another Maglite or any of the upgrade kits again.

My Maratac and Fenix lites though work without flaw and have for some time now , they also have the significant advantage of being far brighter than a Maglite.

My three cents.....

My understanding is that the current Maglite LED AAx2 is something like 5 times brighter than the original minimag. Comparing mine to my Surefire 6PL, it's not easy to say which is brighter/dimmer.

I don't know much about LEDs, but the latest version uses a Rebel which is more efficient than the original LEDs Maglite used in these lights. So they stepped in the right direction by using LEDs in general, then they took a step further by using even better LEDs. -Surely not the best avalible, but an improvement none the less.

I've seen tests posted on candlepowerforums where these ran for over 6 hours on high before dropping to below 50% original brightness (w/Energizer Lithiums). They say you can expect around 20 hours runtime on low.

They are far from the best/brightest lights avalible. But considering the price and the fact that you can find them all over the place locally, they certainly have thier place in my opinion.
