CRKT FE9
I HAVE ALWAYS wanted a Hammond Flesheater, even more so after training in FMA, but never came across one when I actually had the money. So when I saw CRKT made a production version in O1 and G-10 I jump on it from National Knives LLC for 209 shipped.
The knife came in yesterday and thought I would TRY my hand at a mini review.
The Handle:
Hidden Tang G-10 fits the hand like a glove. It might be too small for some, but it is perfect for me. From the start of my palm to the tip of my middle finger I measure 7 ¼ inches. I have small chubby hands. The groves in the G-10 really make it stick. The palm swells also aids in holding on to the knife too. Overall the handle is very well done.
Balance:
When you first hold the knife it feels handle heavy but the balance I right above the Guard. Well balanced bald.
Blade:
9 inches of O1, came shaving sharp on both edges. The finish is a high gloss black. The blades seems small but it is a full 9 inches. The blade has a slight forward kant to it. Looks to be shallow hollow grind, thin bevels, not a beat it up chopper tank chopper but pretty purpose driven “flesheater”
I cut about a dozen jugs filled with water ranging from 128 oz to 24 oz. It had some trouble cutting thru some of the 64 oz jugs just with slightly thicker plastic, but over not bad considering the blade is narrow and light. You can pick up a lot of speed which help the cutting.
Snap cuts into a cheap interior door, cut deep without issue. Also snapped cut and hacked at my trusty 4x4 cedar block, deep cuts, work well again because you can really get the knife moving pretty fast.
Cut free standing empty paper towel rolls, free standing Capri sun boxes (empty) and free standing empty Styrofoam (sp?) cups with ease.
Cut free hang gutted 550 cords okay; I think it was more me than the knife.
Chopped at an old pine chair, took good size chunks out of the legs and then easily split the legs with the grain. Not really a chopper but if you hold the handle towards the bottom it will do in a pinch.
Tip:
The tip is needle like, so I was worried it would not hold up. I stabbed 4x2 pine repeatedly, stabbed the door mention above multiple times, as well as the back porch stair. You shouldn’t be prying anything with it but it held up to a lot of stabbing. Coating did wear off at the tip. This knife excelled at thrusts, easily penetrating everything I stabbed. Tips speed is very fast which lend itself to great snap cuts.
Sheath:
Heavy duty plastic type material looks very versatile; I like it but really haven’t used to write more.
Overall Impression:
After owning a lot of knives from MAD DOG® to Pakistani specials, this is a great purpose drive knife for the money. The quality on mine seems amazing, only time will tell. I feel it can be used for other tasks other than “fighting” if needed in a pinch.
Feel free to PM me questions or for more details on the above.

I got mine last week. Out of the box, my FE9 came sharp but not shaving sharp. I'll have to learn the art of sharpening a knife sooner or later...:p

Dang, you beat the flesh eater pretty good! Did it clean back up okay?
Thanks for the review, this is one mean looking blade. Reminds me of an Entrek
Ranger MK II.

A definate must have.

I have a question about training blade - is it very stiff?
Stiffer than Cold steel trainers?
