Anyone know of a source for a miniature block-and-tackle that would use paracord for line? I remember seeing them years ago, but haven't seen one in a long time. I did some web searching to no avail....

I'm interested in an easy way to hoist game (deer) out of the reach of animals until it can be processed/packed out.

home depot has little dual sheave pulleys with eyelets on one end. One could rig up those with paracord.

cheap too, about $6

I've noticed those at the local hardware store. The ones I saw looked like cast metal with nylon sheaves. I was doubtful about their strength. I think a sailing supply store would probably have some strong, lightweight models, but I don't think there's one close by... I live out in the sticks. I'll have to do some more web searching.

mete,

I did check Cabelas. I bought a gambrel and hoist there last year, but it's too big to pack; I use it at home.

Thanks,

Are you talking about this?

Another option is to go to a marine supply store and buy double (or triple) pulleys and rig up your own. That's what we do for hanging food out of the way of critters.

Check climbing stores or those that sell rigging for rescue crews. The Rescue crew ones will probably be a bit bigger since they typically use rope considerable larger than paracord. Climbing stores sell some nice small pulleys and if you know what your doing you can easily rig a 4:1 or greater rig (I think I have that number correctly, been a while since I climbed).

They're also quite easy to rig with prusik knots and some carabiners. Just look in a self rescue book at the local climbing store. That would give you some gear that would serve double duty.

I would build your own, quick easy and pretty cheap. I use this one a lot at work http://www.ropeworks.com/s.nl/it.A/id.1641/.f?sc=2&category=98 it is designed for rescues and is WAY more expensive than what you need, but we also built a tiny rig based off this design. Using small pulleys from a sailing supply place and some smaller diameter climbing rope, you could use paracord or any other cord that is rated. The pulleys we used are I think around $10 a pop and I'm pretty sure they are rated enough to support a deer. They can be ordered online. I'm not at home at the moment but when I get home I can send you the info and link to the pulleys. The prussik knot makes this design super easy to use. The tiny rig we built could easily fit in your pack, even a jacket pocket. (depending on how much cord used)

You climbers have it figured out!

Something pocket-sized or packable is exactly what I'm looking for. I'd appreciate any links to products you recommend.

Thanks very much for your help; I do appreciate it.

I forgot to ask you guys....

If you use a Prusik-pulley rig like the one shown in the link, is there a way to rig it so you can slide the Prusik away from the sheave to lower the load back down?

I think for hauling a deer up out of reach of coyotes, etc., I'd have to put the Prusik (anchored to something) on the long end of the rope I was pulling to lift the load, rather than above the bottom sheave.

I'm not a climber, but I love that technical rope stuff. :D I do have a copy of "Mountaineering, The Freedom of the Hills." I better get it out tonight and thumb through it....

ah the ones i saw were all brass plated steel.

CMI makes a dual sheave micro pulley rated for 7000 Lbs MBS, they are small enough to fit into a pocket. I use them for all sorts of setups.

you have to physically push the prusik toward the pulley as you lower in the line, which under a heavy load can suck by yourself. Let me run that idea of moving the prusik or setting up a simple anchor point to say another tree or yourself with a friction knot on it by a buddy of mine, he waaaay better at the mechanical advantage stuff than me. I know there is a good way to do it. I'll get back to ya

The CMI units are sweet! But they're more than I need (1/2" rope capacity and 4oz. weight for each micro dual sheave unit... and a $40+ cost each). I'll check out the big home supply stores when I'm in the big city and check out some sailing supply places on the web.

Thanks again for the recommendations,

Desmo,

Here's a link to the West Marine "blocks" page. LINKY

If that worked right, it should link to the page, sorted by price, with lowest first. The blocks you would want for what you're doing should have a safe load of the weight the game you're hunting. The series 29 Utility blocks by Ronstan might be a good combination of price and capability.

Also look in the "running rigging" section for good strong rope. The white Sta-Set is on sale right now. 1/4" should work.

West Marine has the stuff I'm looking for!

Thanks again for the help, gentlemen! I'm putting together an order now.
