MoD Razorback, recommendable?

i have 2 of them, both black combo edges - they are ok, but stay away from the black coating, it sucks (on my 2 anyway) also the tang is NOT full length, and the blade is really ground THICK, its hard to get real sharp - other than these points, its ok - i personally like my $30 CRKT polkawski/ kasper companion better, as long as ya get a decent sheath for it, which ya can for about $30 - but the razorbacks, as long as ya get a good price, are ok........

The Razorback is built for one purpose and one purpose only - self defense. As a general utility knife, it sucks, the cross section is just too thick.

Sifu,

I am only interested in the black coated models so please tell me what kind of problems they have caused.

If you like the razorback you would really like the Dozier Arkansas toothpick in one of his fine sheaths. I like the horizontal one. I know its more money, but its a lot more knife.

I emailed MOD about the Razorback. I was told that it is hollowground, so the narrow blade shouldn't mean that it has a thick edge. Slicing ability would still suck, but at least it could be sharpened.

Horus Mod stopped using Titanium Carbonitride about six months ago because of the problem of poor wear. Since then they have been using Boron Carbide, not as Black as Titanium Carbonitride but a drak grey in color this coating should not scratch like the Blak-ti.

I handled one of these in my LKS dam what a cool little knife. but god help you if your thumb slips up onto those serrations  i had to pass on it. not to say that it would happen to you. I could just see myself in the E.R. explaining that one.

I was just wondering what Massad Ayoob, the "great" NH LEO was thinking when he "helped" MOD design the Razorback. It sure IS NOT a general purpose knife and IMO, has ONLY one purpose, as a last ditch defensive weapon. If Ayoob had a LEO in mind, I would think a knife that at least can cut a little kid's pant leg that is all tangled up in his bicycle chain would be the better choice. If Given a choice between the razorback, the Hornet, the Trident or the Tempest as a LEO knife, my last choice would be Ayoob's. I can think of at least 10 knives in the 100 buck range far better suited than the Razorback.....wolf

Horus, following is an excerpt from James Mattis' impressions of the Razorback:
"The knife seems to contradict a lot of what Massad Ayoob has said about surviving the legal system after surviving the fight. Perhaps there are still some jurisdictions that are weapon-friendly enough that a knife that said "Masters of Defense" and "Lethal Force Institute" on the blade wouldn't get its civilian bearer sliced and diced (figuratively speaking) by the DA or the plaintiff's attorney, but I don't live in one."
I couldn't agree more. IMO, marginal performance characteristics aside, the "Lethal Force Institute" inscription alone would keep me from carrying one. Just try explaining that to a LEO, let alone a jury. Here are James' full coments on this & a couple of other MOD models.

IMO, The Razorback shows what LITLLE actual street experience Ayoob has as a PART TIME NH LEO. The Lethal Force Institute is NOT attended by many, if any NH LEO's, if that says anything about Real world Law Enforcement street survival. The razorback is just another example of a non-fuctional piece of steel, shaped into a "defensive knife" that is supposed to be EXACTLY what Massad Ayoob wants all to think is the ideal "cop knife". I wonder why All the officers in his "current department" were all "gifted" the Janich designed MOD INSTEAD of his own design???????? Yes LFI....WTF

Wolfmann: Your absolutely right, Mr. Ayoob did not design this knife as a general purpose knife, but as a small, concealable, fixed blade defensive weapon. I think he actually prefers a simple folder like the Spyderco Endura or Police model for general purpose use. I don't think I have ever heard Mr. Ayoob say anywhere that this was the "ideal cop knife" as you stated.

I also don't think Mr. Ayoob recommended that MOD put his schools name on the side of the knife. He does not even encourage his students to wear their LFI shirts or hats out in public.

As far as "Real world law enforcement street survival", I doubt if very many NH LEO's have attended his LFI classes, they are geared toward civilians, not LEO's. (though probably some could use the extra training) Mr. Ayoob has been head of firearms/deadly force training for the American Society of Law Enforcement Trainers since 1987, and is one of the more prominent police instructors in this country.

BTW; I can think of many other knives I would prefer too! :D

to answer your q's about the coating, the prob is it sucks - wear from the sheath has worn it completely off in places, and the knife doesnt get carried much - and MOD will not recoat - have had the knife since 02/01 so not that long, and they have never cut anything tougher than paper - ya can get them sharp, but ya have to get a steeper angle on it imho, i used my gatco to grind it steeper and now its real sharp, but like i say, the coating isnt worth a flip, when wear from the sheath wears it off, and the knife looks like trash, aftet just a little carry(i bet i have carried it 10 times.....).......

sifu

can i assume, that since they changed the coating, since it sucked, that they will redo my knife, if not for free, at least for a fee?????

sifu

PS - untill they do recoat it, i will NEVER buy another MOD product, a $120 knife (closer to 2 retail) that the coating wears off so easily, they should be ashamed of themselves and there are toooo many other maufactureres around w/decent coatings to mess w/one who doesnt care about what the knife wears like - i emailed them about redoing it at my expense, and they wrote me they wouldnt do that and hoped the knife had served me well - wrote them back it hadnt served me at all, and why couldnt they recoat the blade, and never got a reply - poo on them, buy something else, nothing they have is as good as an BM AFCK anyway imho, and it will cost 2X as much - not to mention stuff by spydie, REKAT, emerson, etc - again, i would rather have my CRKT companipon w/a custom sheath, a $29 knife lol - actually the jokes on me, who paid $120 for the MOD's and now, carry my companion instead

and mas should stick to the gun mags, i dont have a clue as to why he would be an expert knife designer??

i bought the knives back when i didnt know better cuz i thought they looked neat, have never felt the same about them since finding out they are not a full tang design........

and thats my rant on MOD for this month lol

As I stated in my last post MOD stopped using Titanium Carbonitride
about six or eight months ago because of the problem of wear.Almost every knife company that was using it stopped. Most everyone has changed to Boron Carbide. Microtech, Benchmade, MOD,Kershaw,William Henry. Strider has been testing Boron Carbide with great results. And just last week I shipped six blades to Emerson.

If you can get the handles off your knife I would be happy to recoat it at NO CHARGE and I know for a fact that your sheath won't scratch Boron Carbide off.If you want to take me up on this offer just Email me.
