Anyone making a full tang hard use short Gadius or Xiphos? Something with no more than a 12"? It'd have to be 17" or less in overall length including the sheath. Would appreciate any info. I have a Busse Gladius... it's too large for my purposes.

Chris Palmer makes a few models of Xiphos type swords. IIRC the blades tend to be about 14" but he could probably make one with a shorter blade for you.

His steel is well tempered 5160. I have one of his khopesh swords (for about a year now) and I'm very pleased with it. I have a modified version of it due to arrive here anytime in the next two weeks. The mods didn't cost me anything extra.

He also makes this item called a Smatchet, which is pretty much the most well known of all modern "gladius type" swords...

if it's only got a 12" blade, doesn't that make it fall more into the realm of a pugio or the greek equivalent (the name escapes me)?

Infi-del,
A xiphos would have been closer to the length of a gladius, whereas a pugio is a dagger. Wikipedia says that the xiphos could have been as short as 30cm (12") but was typically around twice this length.
