Just finished this up today. Out of the mods I've done so far I think I actually like this one best! It started its life as a 24" Imacasa Cuma--and I'll post pics of the removed hook later. It balances about 6" in front of the grip and broadens slightly toward the point, and feels nice and nimble with a big sweet spot. As much as I love a hooked blade, this modded version would be much more versatile piece to have in the woods! The blade is 19" now.

Since you're in Costa Rica I presume you're asking why the base of the blade is sharp? If that's your question it's because you can choke up on the blade quite nicely for whittling/making feather sticks or using it like the base of a chef's knife. The balance ended up being nice enough that you actually have a good deal of control over that section of the edge. To facilitate doing so I radiused the area where it flares out so it doesn't bite your fingers when choking up on it. :)

Pretty cool.
Feather stix wont work here. We have a tree called guapinol that burns like modern gunpowder.Soaking wet, it lights like a cotton ball full of Vaseline.

Looks nice. Almost exactly the Hansa Barrigon machete. Surprised that the tip is gone, I thought you were crazy about the downswept tips!

 Man, those sticks I used out of twigs must have been broken or something when I had to split wood and use feather sticks and shavings in Peru and Costa Rica during the rain, cause they worked, and were the only way to start the fires without vaseline/cotton balls or other tinder sources

I have one machete. It is probably 30+ years old. I carry it in the tool box of my truck.
Over the years, I have, on occasion, sharpened it with a file. It works every time I pull it out to clear some vines or what not.

That's 'cause this one isn't for me. The big guy is still in production and I can get another from Machete Specialists anytime. The smaller one I can't replace, and I like it better. That one stays stock and I'm keeping it close.:thumbup:

Here it is with the section I lopped off the tip. I'm probably gonna make a neck knife or something out of it. :)

Cool mod. I like the modded version much better than the old version. The hook would get in my way.

I took some more pics to post in the thread on the exchange forum. Thought I'd show 'em here too since they came out so nicely!

When I was testing the edge out on it at my folks' place (I use their basement to work in since I don't have anywhere at my place where I can use/store power tools, vices, etc.) I was going through stuff 1 1/2" thick in one chop! I'd like to see what it could do food prep-wise, too, but I figured it'd be unprofessional to do so! :D

Unprofessional? In the name of science I plead, slice an apple! We need more performance details!

I just figured folks wouldn't want me to do food prep with a piece I was selling. I can tell you right now, though, that this thing balances almost as well as a chef's knife.

That looks like a real workhorse general purpose blade, much more so than the special purpose hook it was. That is the cool thing about machetes. There is always a right one for the job but sometimes it's contained in another blade. You did a good job onthe mod. Now it's begging for a sheath and some dirt time. Mac

I'll get into sheath work next, but I dare say it won't be for a little while! I'm using the funds I generate from these things to buy tools and I've got a design for a chopper I'm getting blanks cut for--and that initial setup fee is a chunk of change! :D

What I said to Andy I'll say to you--your compliment goes a long way in my book! You should see what I have planned for an old Corneta cane machete. :)
