Mon Cheri from Ferrero

I am trying to find these in the United States of America. These are Chocolate covered cherries in a liquor based syrup. The Mon Cheri candy I have found locally is a Hazelnut variation in a different color wrapping.

Are these European chocolate "pralines" available in the United States? Are chocolates with liquor in them even legal in the USA? Can I have them shipped/imported in from Europe?

Thanks!

Stay Sharp,
Sid

p.s. Yes, I did look at the Customs web site and read some really terse document talking about taxation of imported liquor but, I found no reference to the candy.

Sorry, can't help, but I do understand why you want to get them.
In Germany i used to eat these mon cherie chocolates all the time. REALLY good stuff.:)

Try getting a European member of BFC to send you some in a small package, I see no reason for customs to cause you any trouble. I used to get gummi bears sent from Germany all the time to Jersey with no problems. The package just needs to look like a gift. I doubt the fact it has a bit of alchohol in it will be a problem, but nowadays who knows.

Well, good luck.
Man I'm getting hungry now, I'd love to get a hold of some too.

Practically every corner store in NYC sells these...shouldn't be too hard to find online. I never realized they had alcohol in them! Could have ended up with a DWI from them. Nah, probably not enough alcohol.

Yes I saw these or something similar to them at Trader Joes last month. It might have only been a holiday special thing though. Trader Joes does have locations in Arizona you may want to call. I have also bought that brand at Longs awhile back. Not sure if they still carry it though. The only restriction I think was that you needed to be of legal drinking age. 21 here in California and show them your license.

I went to the Trader Joe's here in Tucson. They did not have any Mon Cheri candies and didn't know what I was really looking for. I did find some Tequila filled chocolates though.

I called Customs and found out that they are in fact available in Mexico but will be confiscated upon re-entry. I guess instead of going down to drink beer I'll just have to eat all the candy I can hold and bring back a bottle of Tequila.

I also called the Imports offices of both Customs and ATF to inquire about personal shipments into the USA from abroad. That one seemed to stump them since it was for personal use, not resale and, less then an Ocean Cargo Container load. They are going to hit the books on that one and get back to me.

Mr. Williams, are you sure we are talking about the same Mon Cheri candies? They should be in a red and pink foil wrapper inside a red box. The Mon Cheri's I have found locally are all in a gold foil wrapper with pink writing and specifically say the have Hazelnuts, not cherries in them.

The quest continues ...

Thanks for your help everyone!

back in 1990, I had a U.S. Customs rep tell me
I couldn't take back liquor-filled chocolates
from England (Mon-Cheries).

"I can take back liquor?".........."Yes,"

"I can take back chocolate?"......."Yes."

"But I can't take back liquor-filled chocolates?"......"Right."

So I lost about $15 worth of good chocolates!

Hi Martensite,

That customs rep, back in the 1990 must have had a sweet tooth, I guess your liquor-filled chocolates were eaten and not destroyed ;)

I have send liquor-filled chocolates in small parcels by registered Airmail to collaegues in San Diego and every one was declared on the little green customs form and no problems with it.
Besides the Ferrero cherry chocolates we have what we call 'rum-bonen' a bean like chocolate filled with rum, tasty :D

Best Scouting wishes from Holland,

Bagheera

Dude, I don't know where you can find them in the USA but I can send you some if you want. Here you can buy them if you are old enough to walk to the nearest store :D

These kinds of chocolates are readily available here in western Mass. I get them from a specialty grocery place, a kind of upscale yuppy store with gourmet food items. I guess that's what the Trader Joe's is although I have never been in one. I also can find them in a fancy bakery in Northampton and in a wine and beer shop that also has gourmet food items.

My personal favorites are the Lindt Williams Liquer and the Glenfiddich filled ones. The Cherry ones are good too though. Several different companies make them and there's a whole line of brand name liquer filled chocolates out there, Courvoissier, etc.

Since chocolate is widely know as "The Fifth Major Food Group", and the FDA recommends 2.0 ounces per day, I was surprised that I could not bring them to the U.S.A.

A little off topic here, but do try the champagne truffles from Teuscher if you ever have the chance. Flown in fresh from Switzerland every week. Supremely good stuff but expensive.

Definitely available here in Toronto. ('cause we bought three boxes of them for the holidays - chomp, chomp, chomp, hic!)

You must remember that to a Customs agent, with all of 6 weeks of training, this makes PERFECT sense - because that is exactly what it states "in the manual".

You can't seriously expect them to make a subjective decision, can you?

(Sorry about your cherries. In your honor, I am going to eat a few right now with my breakfast coffee.:D )
