Mora Companion HD - Possible Fake

I just purchased a Mora Companion HD (military green) from Amazon. I noticed the MORAKNIV logo stamped on the blade is lighter in color and contrast on the blade. Next to the Made in Sweden is just the word "Carbon". Product images online usually say "Carbon Steel". Did Mora change this at some point, or is this a possible fake knife?

I have no clue to the real answer, but usually it's not worth faking a ~$14 knife

The gigantic rotating 3D example of a Mora Companion on the company's website just says "carbon", not "carbon steel".

I'm not sure if that's the same Companion model you're talking about. If not, you should be able to find a match on the Mora website.

There are five Moras on my shelf, including the HD Companion. The etch on all five says "Carbon Steel".

Like the man says, why take the trouble to fake a $14 knife? My guess is that your knife is simply older stock.

I think the one discussed here is probably real, however.... numerous bait/tackle shops and wally world all sell the "fake" mora shown below. These are not actually marked Morakniv but look pretty close to identical and cost a few bucks. So, someone is making a mora knockoff...

I purchased a companion from Amazon probably three months ago. It has "Carbon" instead of "Carbon Steel" stamped on the blade.
I think you're in the clear.

I have learned not to underestimate what the Chinese will try to fake. When I see differences in the product stamping or logos I ask questions. Better safe than sorry, especially when purchasing online.

They are happy to fake anything. Why not fake a 14$ knife? That is 2-3 times what they sell a Rough rider for and still make profit.

I got an email back from the production manager at Morakniv with an explanation about the change in logo which evidently took place late last year.

He verified that they removed the word "Steel" after Carbon on the newer stock of knives.

Below is a link that he included in the email.

What he said.
Who would bother to fake a $14 knife?

I recently bought this knife off of the bay, the site had the same images as the real site and much lower prices. This is what I got for around 7 bucks;

The overall handle was just every so slightly different than my other Opinels, just a bit smaller in the "waist" to my eyes. the collar did not work like my originals and has this detent that fits in a slot. It did not lock well like the real deals and for 7 bucks it was not worth sending it back. Buyer beware these days...

imo they will possibly counterfeit anything now...

It appears to be authentic. There was a post about these changes here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1417828-Puzzling-new-Opinel

SwiftDream, I'm pretty sure that is real. I remember reading that there has been a change in the locking collar.

SwiftDream, I have to agree with Jake and Alan. That's an authentic Opinel. Although I don't have one with the new locking ring, I have a friend who picked up a few recently and they had the same ring as yours. Honestly, I imagine it would be difficult for anyone to produce a fake Opinel for anywhere close to the price they sell for.

You guys are spot on it is the genuine article. I contacted the Opinel USA site and sent them this image too. The reponce;

I contacted the brand manager this morning and he informed me that this is the new OPINEL locking ring!

The No7 knives are the only ones who have them right now.

They wanted to making something that worked great even better - they are meant to hold the blade in position better than the current rings :)

Thank you!

Sincerely,
