Hi gang, I just got my first Mora knife!

It feels pretty dog gone good for a fifteen dollar knife. The handle is very comfortable and grippy and the blade is razor sharp.

It is the 860 F, which I believe is the stainless steel version.

My question for you is the sheath is great and bright but it has no retention what so ever. If you hold it upside down the knife will slide out.

It is a plastic sheath I believe so I dont know if you can heat it up to improve the retention or is it a lost cause?

Thank you for any help you can give, I really like the bright color of the factory sheath.

Yes, you can actually heat these ones up and make them tighter. I first tried my heat gun but it melted pretty quick. But the wife's hair dryer worked great. Just go slow and don't let it get super hot. Squeeze it in a little when it's malleable and you will be good to go.

I am NO fan of molded sheaths, whether they're kydex or generic plastic, but of all of them the Moras seem to be the least rattly and loose, and the best at retaining. Maybe the knife isn't pushed in all the way, or you got a melon. The 860 is indeed Stainless. I have the OD green version and it makes for a killer kitchen knife. My roomate and both like to cook, and it feels alot more manly when you're dicing veggies if you do it with a Swedish survival knife :)

TKnife's hair dryer suggestion is a good one. If you want to take it a step farther, spend half an hour soaking some black paracord beforehand, do a hangman's knot around the molded retaining portion of the sheath, and the paracord should keep the round plastic nice and tight.

I made a wet molded leather sheath for my Mora Triflex. Easy fix - You could glue a strip of Velcro to the belt loop on the sheath and wrap it around the handle. Just replace it when it wears out.

I wonder if you slipped a ranger band/piece of inner tube up and around the loop (so it would be on the outside of the belt so to speak) it would help grip the handle a little?
Might be a less 'destructive' alternative if you have a bit spare.

I have no experience with this particular model but have always found retention pretty reasonable, except on the Classic model's classic plastic sheath...they are complete bobbins!!

I had the same problem. I did this. Bicycle inner tube and cord. Unfortunately it will not work with my Bushcraft Force.

You have a retention problem with your Force? All the ones I've had pass through my hands had good enough retention that I could shake them upside down without them coming loose. Is it just from wear?

I glued a small strip of belt leather inside the throat of the sheath as a retention bump. Works fine.

I have the same model and it has incredible retention, but you do have to seat it pretty hard to get the click as it locks into place.
The photo does look as if the blade is fully inserted, so maybe there was an issue with the moulding on that one? If there's an issue getting a replacement sheath, I'd try the hairdryer route, but my knife supplier in the UK is pretty good about replacement/warranty issues and would send one out
as a matter of corse.

I have two Clippers. One locks in pretty solidly, one doesnt. Im a bowler. In bowling we use tape to adjust the thumb hole.I did the same thing with a Mora sheath. Took some duct tape and added one small piece at a time until I got a snug fit. It took five pieces of tape to secure it.

Tie a piece of paracord around the back belt section the handle sits against. I tied a pie aroiund and fused the end. it sat right at the mouth where the knife entered the sheath. One loop a and the knife will press tight against it and not fall out.

However I just didn't like the plastic sheath so I made a leather one and wet formed it. the knife stays put in this one.

On a couple of mine, I just made a loop of paracord to hold the knife in the factory Clipper sheath.

I also made some sheaths for some of my Moras.

Sar5,

I made a list of "fixes" for your sheath problem and was wondering if you tried anything yet?

TXB,

Yeah Kydex is the definite fix for this problem, I didn't mention it in my "fix-it" instructions cause you always hear people say... ."I'm not spending more on the sheath than I did on the knife"..... which to me doesn't make sense. Mora's are a great value but why should anyone "punish" themselves for getting a good deal? Once you go with a good Kydex sheath the sky's the limit and I look at it as a "system" that helps the knife fill a "role" better. And since we're posting pics....

Blah blah blah... here's some pictures/examples:

Took this picture before final sanding/finishing on the sheath but it's a Mora Triflex in one of my Pouch-Sheaths:

That same sheath will work: around your neck, mounted to.... Lg. Tek-Lok's, Molle-Loks, Drop Belt-Loops, larger sheaths, I even make a Baldric Rig adapter plate that works with the Lg. Tek-Lok so it goes from belt to Baldric in seconds.

Drop Belt-Loop:

Larger knife but mounts to a pack the same way with Molle-Loks:

With Baldric Rig adapter plate (I make this too):

Side-view belt carried:

Smaller knife mounted to one of my Universal Machete Sheaths:

Then there's always a "simple" sheath.... this is the first one I ever made so i'm not happy with it but don't have other pics:

So yeah...... there's always a Kydex sheath option too.

Let me/us know if you tried any of the other methods and how it came out too.

Thanks,

Eli

I took pieces of ranger band and used epoxy to glue them to the inside of the sheath.

I really like your sheaths - both kydex and the leather.

The sheath on my Mora Companion is about the only gripe i have with it and if it were left-hand orientation there wouldn't be anything to detract from it. I love that it cost only $14, but i'd have a hard time shelling out any additional $ for a better sheath because it would feel like the "bargain" was lost....

I'm just now thinking that investing in an upgraded sheath would remove some of the "cheap, throw-a-way" mentality i have toward my Mora and it would see more use. Further, i doubt Mora is going to change the Companion much so a good sheath would be the longer-term investment as new knives could be bought as replacements. Since the knife is so inexpensive, the sheath remains the familiar go-to and the replaceable knife inside is, well, easily replaced.
