Well I was up in Old Forge and stopped in the Old Forge Hardware store. This is a neat old place that has everything from books to clothes to camping supplies. As always I go check out the knives, they have always been over priced but this was a record,$145 for a Leatherman Wave !!
Whats the worst price that you have come across?

Remmington at the local mall was selling a SpyderCo Moran for $179.95 This was with a leather sheath even though the newer ones had the zydex sheathing system.

No offense to Emmerson fans however, the custom knives made by E. Emmerson on the used/resale market are incredibly overpriced, $1,200 to $2,000.

I purchased a new custom Viper three years ago for $375 which is a fair price for a plain vanilla titanium and micarta knife.

FK

I was attending an art festival in Saint Petersburg, FL and this guy was selling handmade kitchen knives for about $600. He showed me one that was made out of damacus for $1200, way to much for the knives he was selling.

A United Cutlery sword (one that could be had in a magazine like Bud K for 75 bucks) for $1200

It didn't sell, by the way.

The most overpriced knife I saw was in a mall store. A Spyderco police, steel handle and Gin-1 blade for $279.00 Canadian. At that time that was about $190.00 U.S..
I seem to find more knives that seem to be ridiculously underpriced than overpriced. Knives by Mike Snody and some of the knives by Bob Dozier are prime examples.

If you do a search on ebay right now, someone's selling(or not selling) an 8 knife set of Case Dale Earnhardt knives for $30,000! And the "buy it now" is only $55,000!
Think I might get 2

I would have to agree on the custom Emerson stuff. I could be wrong, but I don't think Emerson's custom stuff will always command such a high price, unlike Loveless' stuff. Emerson's stuff would seem to be kind of a tulipmania thing going on right now, a musical chairs of greater fools.

I find Phill Hartsfield's stuff to be waaay overpriced for the level of fit/finish you get. James Piorek's knives are overpriced too, while his carry systems continue to be thoughtful and innovative. (Of course, I'm not sure how I'd explain to police why I needed a 5"-8" fixed blade concealed on my person... Thaaaaat would be pretty indefensible.)

Thats close to $7,000 a knife with the original price at around $200 or so MSRP for the set I would say he is quite the businessman.Maybe he would be interested in trading for a few Loveless or Morans for it? To bad "Lost in Time" doesn't check it out.The sad thing is he is also cashing in on the mans death which in itself is inexcuseable. This could call for some angry e-mails to the seller.

There's some joker on eBay selling a "turn of the century" khukuri with a starting bid of $124.95. It looks like a $20.00 Atlanta Cutlery "khukuri shaped object" that somebody buried in the sand for a while to make it look aged. Jeez!
Well, maybe he means turn of the 20th century?

I popped into a Hardware store near my job adn they wanted 109.00 for a pulse and something like 89.00 for a PST II. I nearly lost my lunch. Bought my Pulse at the Sports Authority for something like 45.00!!!

And I agree with rdangerer. I never understood the prices Piorek and Hartsfield get. Quality looking stuff but nothing amazing that I understand. I particularly dont understand the steep grind that is used on the JSP stuff. Admittedly I dont and never have owned one. They are neat looking, and the carry rigs are great butttt I can pay 70 or so dollars for a well made Greco in 1/4 A2 and have a multi carry sheath done by a Great sheath maker for another 60 or so. I dont know !?!? If Im missing something let me know.

I can believe the high prices on custom knives, especially when there just aren't any or many more coming out of that shop anymore, like Emerson's. You have to see it to believe it, what they pay each other on that forum when one of the really high-end knives goes up for sale, and how fast it goes, too.

But what amazes me is that cheap commemoratives, or factory knives in full current production, get snapped up for outrageous prices. Some buyers just don't do their homework.

But how about this -- a knife for sale recently had this comment: "Less than 5,000 made and this one is serial numbered under 1,500." Is that supposed to be rare? I can understand paying a premium for one of 100 or 500, but at what point does a number cease to have any meaning as to exclusivity? (I'm not knocking the seller by any means -- he was good enough to put up honest numbers, even if they don't exactly excite me.)

i thought this to be a ridiculous price.
ridiculously cheap that is....
i got a Gerber SLG on ebay shipped for 20 bucks.
sure beats the $90 they ask for at stores...

The thing that amazes me is that these guys actually wish they had enough money to buy ane of these Emersons. Sorry, but if I was going to spend $1900.00 on a knife ie would not be an Emerson.

I was in a knife store once and I was quite excited to see that they had a CRK Umfaan in stock--except for the fact that it cost $575, standard model! What upsets me is that the salesman will probably talk somebody into buying it, and that person will be pleased with their decision until he/she finds out they paid about $200 too much.

I've seen a maker at the local Renaissance Faire (who shall, for the sake of taste and dignity remain nameless--Rennies will know who I'm talking about) who sells swords for anywhere from $5000 to upwards of $75,000. His small knives go from about $500 up, usually. I've never seen anything at his booth for LESS than $300, and have yet to discern exactly what it is that warrants these prices. I'm given to understand that he sells several of these a year, however, which may lend creedence to some of his steel's "mystical properties."

I've often wondered what his reaction would be if I approached him, asking leave to cleave an anvil in half--just for demonstration, mind you. Surely, for $75K, it should be able to perform this minor task, as well as deflecting blaster bolts and cutting through bulkheads, neh?

I mean, REALLY...!

People that are selling the Buck Strider for $190. Now that is ridiculous, MSRP or not. At least two dealers sell them for $105. Personally, I can't imagine paying $190 for any knife, let alone $300-$400 for one.
