Motoped is a company formed from a successful Kickstarter venture for a motorized bike kit that utilizes an XR50/pitbike engine and standard mountain bike components. They’ve recently unveiled a prototype of their next product, the ‘Survival Bike’.

Survival Bike

Although the specs haven’t been released yet, the base model Survival Bike shown above has changes over the standard model including a subdued color scheme with Olive Drab overtones, additional fuel canisters, and a carry rack.

Looks like fun. Sure I could go on about the tools and accessories; from my prejudice against things United to how I know I'd do better with a decent air rifle cos I'm rubbish with a bow, but the idea amuses me.

I've been drawing inspiration from a bunch of diverse sources since I started using my last mountain bike as a fishing platform. That soon evolved from the measly overnighter/weekender to the more substantial ensemble I use now. With a reliable small game getter added to the mix I could be very mobile and comfortable for a quite some time. I'm not talking end of the world scenario BS, just a couple of weeks completely unsupported – so it's more like a holiday to look forward to than a task. Living here the small game getter gets nixed 'cos I can't roam around anywhere I like and start killing stuff, so I suffer the impediment to remain mobile. In principle though...

I'm no expert but I've come to like the humble tredder even more now than I did. I can't recall the name of the book but there is a good one on the role of the bike in the early settling of Australia [w00t, genuinely kosher Bushcraft]. If I think of it I'll name it here. Anyway, it's fascinating to see what was happening with tredders, and why they were often preferred to horses or camels.

Just for fun here is an old BSA Folding Paratrooper Bicycle.

"...As a result, BSA, who made the M20 Motorbike, developed a bicycle that could be folded in half so a paratrooper could jump out of an aircraft with it. When folded out, it was used as a conventional bicycle. They were used in all the major landing such as D-day and Arnhem".

I don't get how that is better than a touring bike that fits in the back of the family car. A touring bike will be much easier to pedal. A car carries more stuff.

I've written a reply twice but this forum's operation just flakes out. Bored now. I don't do the necessary kind of tolerance because of the type of problem it is.

A great (if pricey) toy for kid in a suburban neighborhood, but just about worthless otherwise.

I don't know if I'm getting old and lazy but that thing looks like a blast to ride.
It must haul ass with a 50cc motor. I would like to see it stripped down with only the rack.
There is not much adjustment on the seat post but I can work with it.

Not my cuppa tea!! I have a leg powered MTB that will do just fine for now.

But then, amazing what a creative mind can come up although the equipment list is less than premium products on there. But then, not all are gear heads either.

Cheers from Africa

It's a cute package, but where is the food and shelter? Water and cooking gear? Spare clothing and bedding?

You could always convert it to a stationary and get exercise while watching Dual Survival...while still being prepared at all times for the Apockylips, of course.

Pls post some more images ...interesting to see details. What motor are you running?

The motors are Chinese kit motors 66cc . They can be bought cheaply for under $200 a kit on ebay ,all you need is a bike to put it on. The bike in the first photo will do 40+MPH.
Here's a couple more I built a while ago. None of the motors pictured are standard thay all have mophead parts grafted on.

I like the way the curved-spine backbone frame keeps the hot cylinder head away from your legs.

And on the seat, they have it down for using the engine. Guarantee there is a lever tension-adjustable tightener on the top of the seat tube( like all decent mountain bikes) so you can easily raise the seat up in seconds to pedal when needed.

Looks cool, though!

One of the problems is that there is no way to raise that seat. The retraction tube has been cut short.

I thought the same, and haven't even seen the price.

It's a MotoBecane, not at all something new.

Edited to add:

Just saw the price, $2000 for the kit without the engine

Too many products this days try to grab attention by using words like 'survival' or 'tactical'.
