I just found this anvil for sale. Can any of the experts here take a look at the specs the seller has listed and let me know if it is worth $400. See the attached pic. Looks like the face is worn, but I do not know if this is an issue for further use or not. I am wanting to get into forging and I just found this. Thanks!

ANTIQUE 1820-35 MOUSE HOLE 190LB BLACKSMITH ANVIL

This anvil is marked as follows:
M&H
ARMITAGE
MOUSE
HOLE
1•2•23

The logo M&H (Morgan & Henry) Armitage shows it was made between the years of 1820 and 1853. The 1•2•23 is the weight code (the first number represents multiples of 112 (1/20th long ton), the second multiples of 28 and the third remaining pounds.) Mousehole Forge is the only known manufacturer to use dots/periods between the weight numbers, such as 1 • 3 • 14. Sometimes all which remains of the logo is the dots.

The company stamp can still be made out if you know what it says. The weight code is just about perfect.

More information can be found by googleing "mousehole forge". The also have a book out on the mousehole forge as well.

It has a little sag to the face but found this is due to the company only using pure wrought iron. I smacked it with a hammer (not to many 180 year old antiques you can do this with!!) and the hammer just about bounced out of my hand, so its definately not dead.

I'd have to agree. In your neck of the woods you should be able to find a much less swaybacked anvil for less $$. $200 maybe, but not $400 IMHO.

Thanks guys, I offered $100 and am waiting to hear back. I figured that I could try to grind the face out or maybe have it machined? Any thoughts on resurfacing the face? I presume that this is a good brand of anvil?

Too much sag to machine. You'd grind thru the hardened face. I have a 135lb Mousehole,5 times better shape, paid less than half that price! Good anvil, wish it was a little bigger.:)
