Hey guys... here's my story:

Tonight i was talking to some friends on MSN when all of a sudden i get a message from one of them: "is this you?" after that 3 word question was a link..... silly me, i clicked on the link with out asking him what it was about.... it turns out that the link downloaded some kind of virus on to my computer. Im not entirely sure what it does, all I know is that it passes on the "is this you" message and link to all active msn users on my contact list. Ive tried looking the virus up on the internet but ive found nothing on it. I have a fire wall and antivirus software but niether one seems to help. I really cant blame my friends for sending this since they never intended to send it in the 1st place. And even though they are my friends, I know I should have asked them what the link was before I clicked on it.... :( anyways, if anyone has any advice about getting rid of this nasty little bug I'd be very greatful. thanks in advance,

Get rid of MSN Messenger for starters. There are so many security flaws in it that I'm suprised that users haven't had problems sooner. As far as fixing the problem...I have to do some research on it as I don't use MSN messenger.

Ok..I did some research on this and it is something we should be able to fix.

First.....run a virus scan. It will find the name of the virus. Post the name of the virus here and we can move on from there.

In the mean time...

1. Download Adaware SE Personal Edition and update.
www.lavasoft.de

2. Download Spybot S&D and update. http://www.majorgeeks.com/download2471.html

3. Download HijackThis and update. http://s89223352.onlinehome.us/mirror/hjt/
(When you run this just do a scan, save the log to a word file and send me the file so I can see what files you need to remove. This is tricky for someone without some spyware savy.)

4. Download, update, and run CWShredder.
http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html

5. Download, update, and run Microsoft AntiSpy Beta.
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx

Feel free to email me or PM if you have any questions.

thanks ken,

I have class all day so I wont be able to do any of this stuff until tomorow night but Im really greatful for your help.

An easier way to clean your PC of this (it should work) is this
http://www.ewido.net/en/

See the online virus/malware scanner ? lower left corner.. Press start and follow the instructions , it is simple and fast , fast depending on the size of your drive and how many files you have. I'ts also free and you dont need to register anything.
I had a nasty trojan on my home comp about a month back , maybe longer... anyway nothing worked , Symantec , ad-aware , spybot all of which I have wouldnt kill it , Ewido did though.
The beauty of the online scanner is that it doesnt have to install a parent program on your pc , it just scans your comp and gives you the choice to remove the infections. It will also clean any adware , malware , etc off as well.
The only reason I am pushing this site is because it works ! We have used it at work and it found malware Symantec missed.

Try it , its free and doesnt install anything malignant on your comp.
