I am going lake fishing in Canada soon and would like to treat myself to a new multitool. Can anyone recommend a good multitool specifically for fishing?

Gerber makes a nice one with extra long needle-nosed pliers for hook removal and a groove in the file for hook sharpening. Also comes with a plastic coiled lanyard so you dont lose it overboard.

I'd say Victorinox Fisherman as mentioned above or Angler (has pliers instead of scissors) or just a multitool if you want stronger pliers and scissors (if you got something like a swisstool spirit X) I'd also go with a swisstool over a leatherman or any other brand for fishing because of its added stain resistance.

I've used my swisstool more times than i can count fishing, but what i carry more often than not is my fishermans kit from rapala.

What fishing application are you looking for? If hook removal, then forget pliers and get yourself a cheap pair of hemostats (clip on to your shirt or whatever and they are beautiful for fishing). If fish processing, then don't you want some sort of fillet knife? If scaling, well the SAK options will do that.

I've found that a dedicated pair of fishing pliers works a whole lot better than a multi-tool. Multi-tools just have too many nooks and crannies for rust to form. I've also yet to see one with a a split ring tip and the cutting edge on the pliers while good for mono lines are just useless on braided and fused lines. Rapala makes a decent pair and I do prefer the spring loaded ones.

I started this same thread about two years ago. Did not like any of the answers. So I set out to find the most useful fishing multitool.I reccommend the Leatherman Wave or Surge , here is why.I use to carry a knife , needle nose pliers, hook sharpener ,and a jig eye paint buster. Now I just carry one tool, the Surge. It is huge. I wish I had the Wave because of its size.In addition to the usual tools ,both of these have a diamond file which will quickly and easily handle the task of hook sharpening. They also have a small eyeglass screwdriver. I filed it down to a needle point to use for busting the paint out of jig eyes. Both blades ,serrated and regular, are one handed opening and all tools lock. I could probably use the Surge as a boat anchor also.;)

I have been fishing for my entire life. The Gerber stuff is junk, don't waste your money on the Flik Fish! For fishing, the best thing to get is dedicated pliers with a line cutter. An MT really isn't all that handy for fishing, the two main tasks are cutting line and hook removal. If you had your heart set on a multitool then I would recommend the Leatherman PST II or Pulse. Both of these tools have a diamond file with sharpening groove, the best scissors on any multitool (IMO of course), the old tank like LM build quality, and a good pair of needlenose pliers. You can find both of these tools on eBay for cheap if you look. I hope this helps.

Very clever !! I like
I have a leatherman wave, I love your idea, although I use my small screwdriver a lot and would not sharpen it to a needle point. But very cool, great pic as well. I usually use the tip of my knife to bust the paint out.

That's knife abuse, and we don't stand for that. Lol.

Yesterday evening taking only the Surge.Used the pliers to to grab numerous channel cats by the lower jaw , to remove and straighten hooks. Used the diamond file to sharpen hooks. Used the knife to cut bait and line.
