All you fisherman. Im looking for a multitool for fishing. Only leatherman has diamond files , which I need for hook sharpening. So which one with diamond file ,makes a fine angling tool?

.......but if you look on Multitool.org there is at least a couple models with true needlenose pliars. I believe Gerber makes one. I've tried going this route with my multis when on the stream and afloat but wound up going back to the dedicated pliers, fillet knife, and tiny scissors. It just worked better for me and made clean up a lot easier. Plus I never leave my house without some kind of SAK in my pocket so a multi wasn't quite as necessary for me. As always, YMMV.

Quite right Gerber have the Multi-Plier 600 Fisherman: http://www.multitool.org/gerber/4.5-inches-and-up/gerber-fisherman-multi-plier-600.html

Also the retired Leatherman PST II has a diamond file with a hook sharpener: http://www.multitool.org/leatherman-tool-group/medium-tools/leatherman-pst-ii.html

I tried using a Leatherman wave for fishing duties (salt and sweetwater) but they do not work as well as I had hoped for. A dedicated pair of fishing pliers from Rapala, a good knife of your choice and a small hook sharpening stone will get the job done a lot better than a multitool. Corrosion was a big issue for my Wave and a friend who uses the Gerber Fisherman has reported the same issues with them. My present set of pliers... This is my deep sea fishing set. The store had a lot of colors available but I chose the silver ones. Aluminium construction with replaceable carbide cutters. USD55

Victorinox makes the most rust resistant ( did not say rustproof ) multi's out there . A black oxide Spirit S would be a cool double protected tool .

The Gerber pliers have a deservedly bad reputation among the cognisenti .

You don't really need diamond files to sharpen hooks. I usually use high carbon hooks (in case of a break off) for baiting and that's all too easy to sharpen on cheap stones and I've noticed even the stainless stuff (trebles) on lures sharpens easily. One thing though... No matter what I've used I've never been able to get any hook back to their out of the box sharpness.

I carry a ceramic stone and get hooks very sharp. Also I carry hemostats , needlenose pliars , one or two knives I fish from shore , from boat, from canoe, and wade. I think a multitool would be very valuable. Ill get one of the Leathermans with the diamond file. Just thought one of you guys had experience with the different leathermans and could make a recommendation.

I had a Gerber fisherman's multi-tool about 3 years ago. AFter taking it fishing twice I immediately traded it. I didn't like the construction of it at all and I didn't even think that the pliers were even well made :(

I will never ever buy another Gerber multi-tool. I'm surprised that Victorinox hasn't made a multi-tool specifically designed for fishermen.

My 2 favorite multi tools are the original USA made Spyderco Spyderench and my trustly, most faithful Victorinox Swiss Tool. I've had nothing but great luck from both units.

But that's a good point because you would think that there would be more fishing multi tools out there.

Well they do both the Angler and the Fisherman SAKs so I suppose they think the have the fishing side covered. I get your point though, I would love to see Victorinox do some other pliers based tools.

I have used a leatherman wave for the last few years and it has held up well in salt water. All I do is rinse it off in fresh water and let it dry.I am on my 3rd sheath.the scissors cut braid and the file is ok

I use an old Gerber, from those good old days when you could order a Gerber with customized tools from their website. Made in USA too. This one has yellow handles, so it doesn't get lost while night fishing. The black oxide tools have proven to be remarkably rust resistant. The snap-out pliers absolutely rock for one-handed deployment. Fits perfectly in one of those Nite-Ize pocket sheaths.

Thanks for the replies.

I got the Surge. The diamond file quickly sharpens hooks to needle points. I will like the serrated blade for cutting rope. One thing I wanted was a jig eye cleaner. A lot of painted jig heads have eyes that are covered in paint. The Surge has that little removable micro screwdriver. I just sharpened it to a needle point and it pokes right through those stubborn painted eyes. With that modification it has everything I was wanting.

Sheffield "Angler"

and it comes with a hook-sharpener, saw it at amazon

That one appears to have split ring piers. I wonder how that effects the needle nose?
