K...I'm new here. This is going to be my 2nd knife. First one turned out better than I could have ever expected (only did scales).

My question is this. I forgot to order the correct rod stock with a particular knife. I went to ACE and the only thing they had was music wire..... Can/Should I use this or should I order other stuff?

Thanks!

Jon

Did you want to use it for pins ?

it is hard and difficult to cut / handle

Try going to a welding shop and get straight stainless TIG wire, straight soft and nice to use.

Also cheaper than music wire

I use bronze welding (brazing?) rods from the hardware store.

Could the piano wire be used for a wire-wrapped handle?

Not unless you want it to unwrap while you are winding it.
Music wire is 1095, spring tempered.

You can turn any rod to size in a drill, by filing it.
Music wire is not what you want to use!
Brass, nickel silver, even common nails work well. If you need stainless, get the next rod size bigger, and turn it down to size.

Go to a welding shop and get some stainless welding rod. I had some 1/8" stainless electrode for a while, I just cracked the flux off and sanded it lightly and it made good 1/8" pins.

It will work, and work well, but as they said it will be difficult to work with unless you anneal it first.

The craft store I go to for pins has music wire and I use it all the time. It comes straight in 2 foot lengths from 1/32 to 7/32. They also sell brass and copper rod in the same sizes and tube in both as well. I don't find the music wire hard to work at all, it cuts well with a dremel tool or hacksaw and the smaller diameters can be cut with snips. They peen well and shine up very nice.

Very hard to cut with your wire snips though. I use music wire for the spring in lock-back knives.
