My first "Busse" (Apprentice) & why I want Micarta

I traded for an Apprentice (Badger?), which is cord wrapped. I have 2 blocks of black linen Micarta (each with 2 yellow layers). This is the first "Busse" I've had, and I associate them (right or wrong)with micarta handle slabs. I sent an e-mail to Busse about getting the micarta on, I think it would look great. After reading this thread, I am more convinced than ever about the value of micarta.

I am told the knife is INFI, and I want to send it for confirmation. I confess to knowing virtually nothing about Busse knives, apart from their reputation:D ...

The blade looks like a Badger with a 4" black coated (not blued) blade and a 9.75" OAL. The talon hole is ground off (Apprentice) and the handle is cord wrapped. It does not have a lanyard hole (which I'd like). I think it would look really cool with a black and yellow (Busse) micarta handle.

All you Busse INFI addicts can probably tell me more about it, and I'd appreciate that. Fire me an e-mail, and I'll send a pic, and hopefully learn something:confused:

Opinions?

Thanks,
Rob

Basic Members can't do that...:)
I can e-mail you though.

Count me in on that pic request, I've got to see this!

I haven't heard of apprentice Busses making it out except for a mean stree here and there. Looking forward to seeing it.

Bobby, I'd appreciate seeing the pic! I've got my email listed. I've got very few apprentice knife pics, and I'm not sure any of them are INFI. I'll post the pic when I receive it.

Good luck with your project, I'm sure Jerry will be able to accomodate you. And you're absolutely right, Busse and Micarta just go together :D

Bobby, FYI, basic members can post pics through a pic-hosting website, like www.imagestation.com or www.clubphoto.com .

Mail sent Bobby!

The shop can easily tell if it's INFI or A2, or something else for that matter:)

Let us know how the work goes.

Hi Bobby,
Welcome to the forum.
I hate to be the one to bare bad news, but an INFI apprentice knife would be a very rare knife.

Although the steel in your knife is probable a decent knife steel, it would be way to costly to have people practice on INFI.

I have 2 or 3 with macarta grips and a couple of them have camo macarta.
They have a great feel, but you might want to wait and see what gets introduced at Blade before you send the $65-$70 bucks for grips.
You might be able to get a whole INFI knife for not much more.

There is some info regarding Busse Apprentice knives on the FAQ's on the Busse Website. Here's a link http://www.bussecombat.com/faqs.html

To add to that, I'd say that it may be difficult to fit Micarta on it as the handle was probably made especially for the cord wrap. The holes may not line up properly for micarta slabs and to fit them correctly may be more expensive then it is worth.

Hi, and thanks for the info and pic requests, it has been sent to you.

Eric, I had already read the FAQ section, and was hoping for more info. Since I would supply the micarta blocks, the holes could be drilled to match the cord wrap holes.

1whobuys, I realize that it may well not be INFI steel, but I don't know. I know that the person I got it from believes it is INFI, I freely admit not to know. As I said, I would want the micarta I have to be used, since it is black with 2 yellow layers.

Dark Nemesis, it certainly looks like a badger, but the grind at the bottom of the blade by the hilt curves slightly forward instead of straight up like the badgers I've seen pictures of.

Let me know what you all think, and I will post what I hear back.

Thanks,
Rob

Sure looks like a straight handled Badger Attack to me :) A2 or INFI doesn't matter, you're right that it would look cool with black/yellow micarta.

I'm really looking forward to seeing it handled if you get it done. Hey Eric!,Bobby's pic should go into the archive if he doesn't mind. Thats the first apprectice Badger which has been posted....to my knowledge...

I thought so, let's see what can be done (without breaking the bank...);)

I certainly have no objections, Heck, I asked for input and information!

Glad you like the pic!

Great knife Bobby! That's also the first apprentice BA I've seen. I'm pretty sure it's an apprentice SH BA...check out this pic (from Andre Dumochel -hope I've spelled that right-) of a SH BA:

It's got the forward-slanting grind too.

Nice one Bobby! Thanks for private viewing also;)

It looks like a couple scales of some kind might give the handle a little more beef to fill your hand.
Get some after pics if you get her done up in the linen:cool:

I got a response from customer service first thing this morning to my question about the micarta handles...
All they wanted to know was if I knew where I bought the knife, or was it a gift...
I wrote (almost immediately) back that I got it in a BF trade, and asked about reply made by Papathud (Andre DuMouchel) to a post by the person I got it from... I asked if there was a problem...That's the last I heard...?
Clues? Anybody?
