Hi everyone. My friends and are having a competition of who can make the coolest homemade knife. I came up with 3 designs today and I need some help deciding which one to make. There is not a specific use for the knives. Just the coolest design and the best craftsmanship. Tell me what you like and what you hate. Thanks guys.

If your friends are all Mall Ninjas, I'd go with number 3. Otherwise number 2 is the best in my opinion, but lose the bottle opener. Good luck!

The hole in #3 is a serious detriment to the integrity of the knife, if it ever got put under lateral stress.

In #1 the finger area underside is way small, or narrow, it should be more conforming to hold. It looks constricting.

#2 the teeth on spine are too pronounced, imo. You really dont need this feature at all, i dont think.. or, why not a more friendly version to the thumb, as a (non-deep) cross-hatching?

- i vote #2, as they are..

Paul said it. I don't have much to add but I am worried about opening my 2nd beer with a sharp knife.
I agree on the thumb placement needing to be less severe. Also center the pin placement up and down on the first and last pins for my taste.

Similar reaction here.
#2 is pretty nice, with or without the bottle opener - personal preference, and you gotta win that contest, right?

#3 could be rescued with a bit more guard before the blade, a NOT-sharp front bevel, and a real handle - and lose the huge hole to accomodate a real handle. It would be a modern tacti-muk or something. Could be fun for the right crowd.

Since your friends will be the judges, letting them pick would be in your best interest if you want to win ;)

Anyhow if you're going to try number 2, I think you would have to lengthen the handle, shorten the blade, or move the pivot forward to get it to close.

I'm going to re draw my designs with some of the ideas i have gotten on this thread. I should have stated that they are all fixed blades. I have no where near the skill to make a folder yet. I have only made one fixed blade so far. I feel very confident that i will win the contest. One of my friends never finishes what he starts. The other is good but has never made a knife yet. But he has made lots of other stuff and is a good craftsman. We are basically doing this to pass time till summer and to have a cool knife to show off!

-Loose the jimping.... certainly not in the choil.
-Pin placement/spacing looks off.
-No Cedar. Maybe Oak, but a nice solid chunk of Maple firewood would surprise you. Finer grain = finer finish.

...where in MA are you?

I'm in Plymouth MA. I may have some maple outside in the wood pile. I will make the pin placement better. Thanks for the advice.

Yep, lose the jimping , especially in the choil as previously advised. You are getting there, my friend.

Paul

Note to self: See if you can find anything Bruce ever made with a bottle opener.
