This was in my mailbox today:

Stamped "HW" under the poll. Not sure what that signifies.

I'm excited to finally have this cool little axe in my hands.

Just took a quick count of 17 axes needing handles. Time to stop looking at ebay...

Cool axe, the thread made me smile...

I hope you can post some ínformation on how it works. How the steel is on work and whatever, yould surely be interessting.

Kind regards

Great looking little axe! I'm glad you won that. Nobody will mind if you post a bunch more pictures of that.:D It sounds like we're all falling behind on our hanging duties.

Thanks, Gents. I think I'll try to carve a handle for this one out of elm. I'll update you guys after I've used it. I was thinking of trying to pattern my handle after the GB Hunter's Axe. What do you think?

Seems like the corners of the bit would be a little vulnerable. Seems like a good size to strap on my pack, though.

So what is the pedigree of this axe? Sandvik is a Swedish company that had their axes made in Germany?

That's seriously a fine-looking axe. I think your idea for the handle is great; I'd love to see the finished product.
Helko Werk was my first guess too, since it comes from Germany. Otherwise it could be the initials of the person who forged it. It might even be "MH" and not "HW." But my money would be on Helko.

This looks like the 800 gram version (the inscription is similar).
The item listing reads "Hatchet Bahco/Sandvik Forged head..."

I don't know. I'd like to figure out what the deal is. In the little bit of searching I've done, I've had a hard time finding anything about the history of sandvik.

Thanks. I didn't even think about the possibility of it being "MH" :)

The 600 gram version from Bahco:

Some company history, quoted from Wikipedia:

1991 Bahco Tools was acquired by the industrial corporation Sandvik AB and was renamed Sandvik Bahco. The original factory Bahco Tools in Enköping, Sweden, then became a separate production center within Sandvik’s business area Saws & Tools. During this time, major investments were made to increase productivity and to reduce lead times in the production. In addition, a new distribution concept was introduced to improve delivery and availability...

In the mid 1990s Snap-on Incorporated, a global manufacturer and distributor of tools, entered the European market by acquiring the Spanish hand tool company Herramientas Eurotools S.A. In 1999, Snap-on acquired the business area Saws & Tools from Sandvik. The acquired business was named Bahco Group AB, a company with 2500 employees.

In 2005 Bahco AB and Herramientas Eurotools S.A. merged, founding SNA Europe with Bahco as the company’s premium brand. Headquarter was established in metropolitan Paris, France.

HW Means HELKO Werk Axe. It is stamped on the Helko I just purchased. They are made in Germany. Nice piece. This is a Helko axe made of Sandvik steel, not a Sandvik made axe.

Interesting stuff. We'll see how she performs at some point. So it's a German-made, Swedish axe that I shipped over from the UK. I think I'll lovingly call this axe "bastard" or "bastaxe" or "axetard." Whichever one rolls off best.

Did the shipping cost more than the axe head?

Shipping was £9.81 (about $15 USD), so not too bad IMO.

Not bad at all, nicely done you swinderler. I like the name axetard, it somehow fits......................

BLAHAHA. Nice find my friend, well done indeed. Now quit sniping my purchases.

Thanks, Dude. $15 was just shipping, in case that was unclear. It probably was not a steal overall.
