As you may already know, i bought one a while ago.
Then i started carrying it!
Now its scaring me.
The safety is kinda loose, and im not sure i have a Torx driver thats small enough.
Do any of you have a chive, scallion, leek, ETC.?
If so, how good is the safety after use? Like a few weeks worth of use.
I dont wanne be carrying it, any bump it on something, disengage it, and have it open.
In case you dont know, the blade would be facing up and stab me in my side.
In other words: not good!
HELP!

Precisely the reason I never really carried the chive. I have several other speedsafe models by kershaw and zt and have never had one open accidentally (including the chive), but the chive just feels a bit too touchy for my taste. If you are that worried about it you could always take it apart and remove the torsion bar making it manual opening.

Try carrying it in your back pocket with the spine of the blade up against the seam. That's how I carry my Leek and I usually don't bother with the safety.

I have a Leek as my EDC; a cheap allen wrench set will allow you to adjust the safety catch. I do know what you mean, though, about how the position of the blade could be cause for concern. I sliced my finger pretty good once when I put my hand in my pocket a hit the blade. It ended up that I had closed the knife ON the safety before I put in my pocket, causing the blade to be slightly open and exposed. Overall, though, the spring action of the assisted opening should keep the blade safely closed. I tightened up my safety as I got tired of having to mess with it every time I needed to use the knife. With it tightened slightly, the safety stays open as long as I want it left open and doesn't inadvertently fall into the closed position in my pocket and like I said before, if the blade is properly closed the spring in the assisted opening should keep the blade firmly closed.

I'd say go to lowes and buy a torx set for 5 bucks. It is well worth the money

You could tighten down the pivot, but you can't tighten the safety all that much, because it's attached to a plastic piece that will strip with too much torsion. I've only had one Kershaw A/O open in my pocket: the Leek when I had a bicycle accident. I can't really fault the knife for that one, and it didn't open all the way. I don't have the smaller knives, though, so that might be different. My dad carries the small ones and hasn't had problems so far.

About the torx drivers, most knives (like the small Kershaws) use T6 and T8 bits. T10 is also common on larger knives (or the pivot on your mini AK). I'd highly recommend you get a good set of Wiha bits. They don't cost much more than cheaper ones, but they're much better. I crumbled through two sets of hardware store torx bits that didn't fit well when I started collecting knives, I really should have gone the other route from the start.

I carried a chive for a few months and a leek for over a year removed the safety from both, I didn't want the safety and it always had a habit of turning its self on. Never had one open in my pocket and I do alot of bending, lifting, pushing, and bumping my leg against stuff to move it, I'm not sure why everyone is so paranoid about this.

Well, never thought i'd see the word "scary" used in regard to a Kershaw Chive. :D I wouldn't worry about it too much. I hardly ever used the safety on my scallion/leeks and never once had one open on me.

im starting to feel better.
It was/is "scary" because of its position. If it was tip-up, i wouldnt be as worried.
Thanks :)

Either way it's positioned, it would be very unlikely that it would completely open in your pocket if at all. Plus, the Chive is a tiny knife- wouldn't hurt more than a needle prick. ;)

geez; you don't want it to open accidentally, use the safety...period, end of story.

I don't think that's the issue, he was using the safety, but the screw on the safety being loose, the safety was falling open which was making him nervous. Overall though, seems like for most people it's a non-issue

I carry a Leek nearly every day. I have never had one open accidentally. I actually tighten the safety so that is cannot engage. I am happy that it is there though for people that want to use it. I like having the option if I ever wanted it. I don't. Have any experience with the chive though maybe it opens much easier.

The chive is quite a bit more touchy when it comes to accidental opening but I doubt it would happen in normal everyday use.

I have a scallion and don't have any problems with it opening or the safety being loose. Same with my ZT 0350.

I carried a chive as my only knife for years, wore it out and replaced it with another and carried that for years. Never in all that time except for maybe once after I just bought the first one did I use the safety. That thing was clipped to my front pocket for miles and miles of hiking, biking, walking, fishing, kayaking, and even went swimming once (doesn't open very well under water).
It only ever popped open when I dropped it. I would just not worry about it.

oh; well get a torx driver (they ain't a big expense; available @ home depot, etc) and snug up that safety screw a bit then LOL...

I never used the safety. Lmao you guys worrying about things like speedsafe and assisted opening are funny. They just aren't built like that. I have to wonder what you'd be doing to make it pop open in your pocket, cause if I'm not mistaken even if you drag on the little thumb flip pulling your hand back out, the knife will be up against the back of your pocket and unable to open.
