My knife is hard to pull from it's sheath.

This past Sunday my wife bought me a new Tops Scout fixed blade knife. I love it, but the knife is very hard to pull from the sheath. It is made out of hard plastic, and the knife snaps into place when pushed into the sheath. Will it loosen up after a while or is there something I can do to make the knife easier remove from the sheath? It concerns me because it takes two hands and a decent amount of force to pull the knife. Not to mention the risk of me or someone else getting sliced.

I read the thread's title, and I chuckled like Beavis and Butt-Head.

Anyway, wait a bit and sandpaper maybe?
Yeah, me too. I was about to suggest the OP wait for 4 hours then try again...but never more than 4 hours...

I guess the title could have been worded differently. I CAN remove the knife from the sheath, but not as easily as I would like.

OP, I recently bought a Tops ALRT XL and the sheat was small and extremely difficult to remove from the knife, almost dangerously. I contacted Tops and explained everything, they sent me a new one within a week at no charge.

Thank you, I will be getting in contact with them.

The sheath is kydex which means it can be easily manipulated with a little heat. If it were me I would increase the size of the thumb push off point and if that wasn't enough I would loosen it up around the finger choil. I mod all my kydex sheaths but usually to do the opposite: tightening for better retention or to eliminate rattle.

That said, you can easily ruin your kydex sheath by modding it so if you have no experience doing such things and you don't know what you are doing, you may just want to contact tops.

True on all counts.

The one I had was injection molded for my ALRT

With the injection molded sheaths I've had from esee there is a nub that is responsible for the retention. You could try sanding it a bit if you sheath has one too. Once again though, you could do more damage than good and molded plastic is less forgiving and remoldable than kydex.

On my ESEE 3 & 4 I shaved the tab down with my knife and it was so much easier to extract and still had great retention. I miss my esee 3 so bad!

Push ups.... Or have a custom kydex sheath made, or leather. The injection molded sheathes are love or hate.

A few years ago, I bought a new Blackjack Tac Ops Model 8 in A2 steel that came with a kydex sheath. I made the mistake of shoving it into the sheath, even though it was hard to push in. It took about 5 minutes of pulling, prying and cursing to get it out again. This was not the kind of fit that you could just use thumb pressure to pull it out. I was so pissed that I took a pair of pliers and forcefully bent the lip of the sheath to a slightly larger opening. It's still kind of tough to push in or take out, but I can get it out now using thumb pressure. The shape of the knife may have something to do with the ill fitting sheath. It's got kind of a big hump in the middle of the blade spine.
