Hello
I wanted to give you guys some personal experience dealing with Medford Knives. I recently sent my Praetorian Ti in for service. While this is certainly a large folder, it is my edc and I was headed to Montana so I and asked them to check on all the hardware to make sure it was secure/tight and tighten the grip on the pocket clip. I've had the thing for over a year, using it everyday and since I would be wet wading I wanted to make sure it was tight in the pocket.

I contacted them and got my return tracking number and followed their suggestions regarding insurance etc. After they received it I got a call from Greg (Medford) to talk over what they were going to do. He was very clear and helpful over the phone and assured me they'd take care of it and get it back promptly.

Sure enough, a bit over a week later it came (insured with sig required). I swear, apart from the cosmetic wear and tear on the handles/slabs it is like new. They apparently replaced the mounting hardware, the pivot screws and reset the blade and tension.

It operates butter smooth but firm, just like the first day I received it. Drop dead solid lock-up and absolutely dead center. And, to say the least, it is razor sharp again.

I called Greg to ask what all they did and what the costs were. He called right back and told me what they had done (all new mounting hardware etc.) and that there was no charge. He indicated that they did the work as warranty and not to worry about it, just glad I was happy.

All in, I spoke to Greg, Amy, Katie and Geoff just coordinating the details for shipping and service and the 2 conversations with Greg. The customer service was personable and great and the work was superb.

I know the whole warranty policy issue seems to get a lot of discussion about no tools to the knife etc but my experience was great. They were happy to talk to me and Greg was very helpful and personable.

I just wanted to give you guys my experience. Dealing with Greg and the staff regarding my knife and the repairs was excellent.

I owned a Medford 187 but just too beefy for me. Cool knife though and glad I tried one. I think with Medford as long as you follow the 'rules" everything will go well and you do get personal service, usually from Greg himself. Don't follow the rules and you may get your own dedicated YouTube moment :)

Like many makers they have their fans and foes but do make an interesting line of knives.

My experience today was opposite. I called and asked to send a knife in that started feeling tighter in the swing of the blade as if the pivot tightened .it's a nearly 4 year old preatorian. Amy got on the phone and said there is a 100$ fee for any tuning or opening of the knife. I was beyond belief after the conversation. So I spoke to a distributor and got his opinion about what was said... They also agreed it was odd and not a commen response. So he must have spoke to Greg because i got a message an HR later asking me to call Greg on his cell. So I did. What a Douch bag. Explained it was second hand and I'm the second owner. I bought from original owner (my best friend also collector) not long after buying it. He asked about any marking on screws. None. Asked if it has been in salt water. Never nor has touched water period. Than asked if I cleaned the detent. Yes....he seemed shocked and irritated at this point so i asked about being able to get it fixed under Warrenty and then he says he doesn't know and that the girls deal with that.....what??? Can't answer a Warrenty question. So I was trying to to explain i talked to Amy already this morning already and explain what she said and every time I'd start talking he would interrupt me! Kept saying call the factory and they will take care of me. Finaly Thanked me for the support and said he had to go and we can chat another time. This Happened today. I own a couple Grand worth of his knives. First issue on a older, well cared for user knife. Carried it a while and one day recently started to felt stiff in the swing compared to my others. I tried cleaning and such as he suggested in his videos and it all turns into a shit show when I call for help. Needless to say I'll have some knives posted soon. Makes me upset because he was my favorite maker for years. Can't stand i own the knives after today although I respect him and the business. I don't respect the provided service. What a deal breaker. So what, the Warrenty only covers sharpening? Pay 100$ to tune the pivot or possibly clean debris that can't be reached and possibly been there for years of carry? But yet can't do it yourself or it's voided......makes me wonder if the 100 is assuming they have to swap the pivot? (Seems like they have with alot of them recently) covering a mistake? Isn't that Warrenty work!!!!!

That doesn't sound good. Trying to give him the benefit of the doubt, maybe he'd rather not service 2nd hand knives since most owners wouldn't know the history of them? Just trying to think like a maker and why I may not want to give free support to somebody why didn't buy directly.

Well, if thats the case I think he should say that. I was on the phone with him! and also I'm sure the second hand community would love to know there expensive knife you help justify with Warrenty piece of mind means nothing. I bet that would open up a shit show. I may have to bring my experience to YouTube as a buyer beware for anyone else who may buy/ trade for one. Not sure about you but the Warrenty is the bread and butter of buying one of there knives. If it's voided somehow..... completely understandable. But I even said, assuming Its in Warrenty, will it be covered and gred was clueless. Not Amy but the other woman said it would not be covered. I'm at a loss for words. Nothing in his policies nor Warrenty exclude second hand buyers. Now we know to just lie and say your the original owner to avoid the drama of being honest with the dickhead. Sorry, i have sore feelings over how a simple request to inspect the knife turned into, it will cost you this much, then asking the maker that has no clue.

I have 4 of his knives i I bought direct from a distributor. This one I got from my best friend I met back in college. I know it's not voided. Did never used a tool in his life lol he just collected. I got it from him and carried it a good while without a single issue. It slowly developed into a tighter swing compared to broken in. I didn't receive the knife already having this issue. It came over time of me using the knife. Unless he is just going to assume every second hand knife is voided. If that's what he considers, I'm willing to bet anything the market would hit the floor on the second hand for his knives. Collectors want a Warrenty. If it has not been voided it should be honored reguardless how many hands touch it. Terms we're not broken to void it lol again....if it were voided for any reason.... completely different story.

False. On his websight he sneaks this nifty clause in. This is copied from the websight under returns, just to get them to take apart and deal with an issue that developed they charge 150. Amy told me it would be 100 when we spoke on the phone yesterday. Greg couldn't tell me if the Warrenty covers it and told me to ask the girls by calling the factory. Already did it but he didnt give me the time to talk much. So if Amy says to fix the issue i discribed will be 100$ if they open it up. Thats some shit. It's voided if anyone else does it but them. This applys weather its a voided knife or not. Seems like they only cover sharpening and issues they made after leaving the factory .not years later. Why offer a tear down tune up if it's suppose to last if it's not taken apart and voided? Wtf? ........................................................
Reconfiguring – We do not do restoration, reconditioning, changing of components or cosmetic modifications…ever. Your knife should endure many years of use if treated properly and cleaned and oiled as needed. Customers may request “tear-down tune-ups” and MKT reserves the right to accept or decline based on work tempo internally. Tear-down tune-ups are $150 if the knife is untampered, still under warranty and functional with no parts needing replacement. Again, this is a discretionary service based on shop time availability. Knives NOT under warranty may be handled for the same fee depending on the extent of any modifications that have been done to the knife.
